A3: I tend to give my older students theoretical frameworks; my younger ones tools like "emotion wheels" to name character and personal emotions while reading.

But I stopped offering opportunities to practice arts-inspired writing since the election. This realization makes me sad. #literacies

A3: Whew: there is a gap between what I am drawing on to nourish me -- lots of roots music, new Americana, Kendrick Lamar's new album; the work of teacher-artist-researchers (e.g. "Teaching with Arts Infused Pedagogies"; Dr. Kelly Wissman); painting (!!) -- and what I offer my students. #literacies

In particularly, we did a close reading of the Lumber 84 Superbowl Ad from 2017, and studied it in context. Then we dreamt together about telling stories our journeys. How do we frame our story of being on a path? How do others frame theirs? And who is telling whose stories? #literacies

Everything from NY Times Image of the week (which has students entering into discourse in chat with peers around the world, as you likely know!), to movie trailers, TV commercials form the days before and after the 2016 election. This time capsule has been helpful to HS seniors. #literacies

I really appreciate this reminder of ways of being. In my classroom, my own conception of literacies can narrow to the ways of communicating we've (co-teachers, students) taken up. This is reminding me to slow down and remember to dream with students . . .

Thanks for asking. Some exhaustion here as well, but the wood stove and a couple of days off help. I feel really well supported in educator communities post-NCTE. Many affiliates and NWP sites seem vibrant right now. Is the uncertainty reverberating in your school of ed?

A2: In my context teaching HS, civic discourse looks like supporting students in noticing their inner & outer enviro. These days I'm working a lot with rhetorical reading of images -- noticing what's there, but curious also about what isn't the frame, and where and when it was made. #literacies
