This is where I stand. He thought, perhaps naively, that rules would be enforced and loopholes closed to punish the financial dopers to leave us with a clear path for a title challenge. Instead, we've sort of stood still whilst the others have traded amongst themselves and/or Saudi to move ahead.

Sonny has earned the right to decide whatever he wants with the rest of his career and owes us absolutely nothing. If anything, we are forever indebted to the loyalty he has shown.

Thankfully, he got the photo his career with us deserved last season. A legend in every sense of the word. COYS.

Surely this works both ways and feeling the need to poo-poo everything to 'fit in' with the tribe is bad as well?

But my overall point wasn't "hey, you're doing the supporting thing wrong" but that anything which brings a person such painful suffering, probably isn't worth it.

I guess the argument is you can only deal with the teams that bid for him. Plus Rangers will (likely) be playing in Europe this season, so he's bound to get plenty of game time which is really all that matters to us. Hopefully he continues to develop.

He needs regular minutes in a physically more demanding league than the U21s. Not too far from home either.

I search for the glimmer of hope in all the shite, not the speck of shite on the thing that's glimmering. But I guess we all cope in our own ways!

Yes, we need a couple of ready-to-go players โ€“ in specific areas โ€“ to help navigate through all the competitions this season but just because you don't have a new rumour every day doesn't mean the club isn't working on things.

We're definitely going to bring in at least one more new face. Relax.

It's like a doom-off.

The same people walking around with the 'end is nigh' sandwich boards probably thought we were ready to bounce back last summer.

It's never as bad โ€“ or as good โ€“ as you think.

But we did win a trophy & have an excellent crop of youngsters who've already played senior minutes

Believe me, I'm the last person who would throw around the word "depression" for cheap laughs but some of you should seriously reconsider supporting a club that dictates so much of your overall mood.

Or maybe it isn't the club that's the problem*.

*Okay, it's probably partly the club's fault too

Most Spurs fans seem to actively hate the club they supposedly support. They appear to relish setbacks whether we are to blame or not. They play down or ignore successes.

I find it weird.

The self-loathing needs to stop. #COYS

I am looking for excellent freelance writers who specialise in sport (not football, got that covered), music and entertainment.

I've always wanted to do The Set Pieces again. I felt like if I knew then what I know now it would have been so much better.

And now's my chance! So....who's good?

Yeah, to each their own. Not saying I am right either but I think both of those options don't equate to success at the highest level.

My viewpoint is I can accept failure, or coming up short, if it feels like we are trying. Aiming to get lucky and then not being, less so.

27.07.2025 13:38 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Yeah, but Newcastle and Villa are spending beyond their own means/infrastructure whilst we aren't maximising ours. There probably is an uncomfortable truth when it comes to sustained dominance in modern football but it feels like we are handicapping ourselves and not even daring to do (I'm sorry).

27.07.2025 13:24 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I'll see if I can track it down. But likewise, if we hadn't built a stadium when we did we would have fallen behind the elite. Plus, in the current era, we wouldn't even be able to afford to build one. But it's a gold mine (in terms of 'guaranteed' revenue) and with naming rights there to sell.

27.07.2025 13:21 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Of course. The current version of United is how NOT to invest. Although, looking at their success rate during this 'down' period is still impressive. You have to invest and in some cases overpay for the *right* players. Maybe we're scared to do that but it is part of the last step of moving forward.

27.07.2025 13:17 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

With respect to Brighton, they are operating at the infrastructure level available to them - and doing exceptionally well. We are still trying to emulate clubs such as theirs whilst having the infrastructure of an elite side. It just doesn't work. But we should be able to buy smart/right/better.

27.07.2025 13:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I guess we'll agree to disagree here. Aside from Leicester, the anomaly of all anomalies, I can't remember a team winning the PL or CL without being top 4 of their respective leagues wage bill. You have to make the right investments, of course, but it's a major factor to luring the bigger names.

27.07.2025 12:55 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Just because you got burnt once isn't a good enough reason not to try again. And I'd argue we have consistently invested in youth signings, just most โ€“ as it is common โ€“ don't quite make it. Hopefully we are learning from past mistakes by letting the more promising ones get regular football on loan.

27.07.2025 12:44 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Spending more on transfers but drastically lowering our wage bill means we have stood still compared to those we want to compete with.

27.07.2025 12:34 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I think there's a space we can fit into between being morally bankrupt and spending like a club that has an elite infrastructure to bridge the gap.

27.07.2025 12:21 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I'm not advocating for selling assets back to ourselves or being owned by a state. It was more the level of investment needed, both in wages and transfer fees, has start approaching those we wish to compete with/against. If we spend and match the Villas & Newcastles, that's where we'll be.

27.07.2025 12:20 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

There was a noble, albeit naive, belief that doing things correctly would benefit Spurs when it came time for rules to be enforced. But we've seen what the FA/PL/UEFA/FIFA will โ€“ or rather, won't โ€“ do to those breaking and/or bending the rules.

You either act like a big club or stop being one.

27.07.2025 10:27 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 11    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 1

Levy excelled at getting Spurs to become part of the big four/six. He's underperformed since then. It's as if his mentality hasn't changed, like he can't see the goalposts have moved with that initial progression. And he surely can no longer have any faith in authorities clamping down on cheats?
