Check out the old Louisiana Power and Light building next to the ferry landing in Algiers (across the river from Jackson Square.)

Thanks for your interest but if you're not a PBS affiliate then you can't legally show the film, which has copyrighted music covered by a PBS compulsory license. If you are not an affiliate then you are putting yourself at risk by showing the film.

Hi there! American Public Television has offered β€œWZZQ the Movie” to their affiliates to review & vote on for national distribution. If you live outside of Mississippi, please ask your local PBS station today to broadcast the film & share this with your out-of-state friends! Thank you!

What an interesting observation. I’m going to pay closer attention to the bumpers here in Central Mississippi and see if I spot any radio station stickers.

That makes sense. Yet at this point, four decades on, wouldn’t freeform and AOR formats evoke nostalgia as well? There are classic rock stations out there but there are more country stations. Maybe some rock fans became country fans and the rest are just listening to CDs.

In Mississippi, WZZQ was sold and went country in 1981 as MISS 103 and has been topped the local market ever since. That trend seems to have played out in other places as well. Mystery to me. Oh well.

Yet country stations thrived and still seem to. Why?

True, and there was value in that. So odd to see the playlists back then. I made a documentary about a freeform rock station in Mississippi in the 1970’s but the top 40 station there at the time played everything from the Beatles to Ferlin Husky.

@jonathanhealey.bsky.social Thank you for the post about Josh Ritter and his album of β€œThe Animal Years.” Based on that recommendation I’m listening to the album now and am thoroughly enjoying it. Much appreciated!

The way he delivers the line "what were you doing in Hattiesburg?" is so great. Space Ghost knows you can't be hanging in Hattiesburg for non-nefarious reasons.

We really were. Folks in other places had rock radio stations they loved but I do think ZZQ was magical, especially given where it sprung up. We just needed it so much. Being in Mississippi also gave it an offbeat quality all its own. We owe Phil Seymour for pitching the idea to management in 1968!
