This is also after FF7 was still fresh and it's shift to scifi content integrated with old riffs was popular. A further jump towards scifi did not feel outlandish to me at least at the time, especially with scifi hitting so well then.

There's a lot you can do with continuation and a lot that can go wrong with "I know better than the fans" appropriative reboots. But I don't think that creates a barrier against things like FFSW. Otherwise culture feels lock in flat binaries of new and old IP.

As a big FF at the time I loved the scifi take on a monster setting with underlying concepts and the odd name drop. Gaia was a huge thing in 9. It felt adventurous and fitting for the new millennium vibe, and I appreciate it now it far more than the faithful FF7 spin offs.
