I am writing a book that explains why Washington DC is the way it is: leafy, monumental, and segregated. I am also a licensed architect.

Income, education, and religion are independent of each other, so I would love to see which is driving which.

I had to look this up and I am utterly bored by the discourse already.

all the lines are basically flat, showing less than 2% increase in republican support by income.

Had to do a double take at this graph from @ryanburge.bsky.social, showing how completely religious affiliation swamps income for predicting who voted for Trump in 2024. www.graphsaboutreligion.com/p/why-religi...

Both of these projects were in Arlington County VA btw. So I am not sure where the requirement came from.

I have to assume that half the hate for Latinos is because the Hispanophone world is just too good at designing buildings.

Great interview with Dorothy Provine, who I guess is the Mother Ann Lee of DC government records.

Love a good artifact box; only thing that could make it better is using rammed earth.

When I have done rooftop dog runs, we were required to put a sensor-actuated valve that switched the flow from sewage to storm when it rained.

Not sure how small we would have had to make it before we could avoid the storm connection.

The challenge this year is to move the full appropriation forward. The contract was awarded in 2024 and the first payment was released to the contractor, who mobilized. However, the 3/4 of the funding was pushed back to 2027 (FY28).

This is not an ideal way to run a construction project.

Great! So please email your councilmembers and the mayor to make sure they don't try to cut it from the budget again.

Happy 40th Birthday to the District of Columbia Archives!

This year we're getting you a gift that's 30 years overdue: a new home that will make DC's largest historical resource secure and accessible for the first time. πŸ—ƒοΈ @dcarchivesfdn.bsky.social

I cannot get the soundtrack to this movie out of my head. Yes, it's a musical made from Shaker hymns, but not in a cheesy way, and also not in a pointlessly transgressive way, and smuggling in a ton of experimental music techniques in a way that is just works perfectly.

Agree. I was surprised Derek has talked about his technique so openly given how brutally competitive the industry is.

The other thing he realized was that humiliating people on the street about physics knowledge garnered an audience, but not the right one: not one that wanted to learn.

This one might be a harder lesson for academic outlets, alas.

Derek Muller (PhD) explained that he didn't hit his stride until he started to structure the videos around posing something mysterious or interesting, and bringing the audience in as partners in discovery. This isβ€”I am sure you're yelling at your phoneβ€”also how detective novels work.
