โI feel rageโ: I talk to the head of Save the Children about child poverty in Scotland. She tells me how 1-in-3 families with babies live in poverty, that political failure by both govts brought us here and why the public want action not more hard heartedness

I met with @neilmackay.bsky.social for his big read in todayโs @heraldscotland.bsky.social about ending child poverty, the role of public attitudes, the need for a baby guarantee and harnessing the power of children & families

26.03.2025 13:45 โ ๐ 25 ๐ 22 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0It is a political choice to plunge 50,000 more children into poverty by the end of this parliament, as a result of the health and disability benefit cuts. This news will be devastating for families across the country struggling to make ends meet.

Scottish Government's latest #ChildPoverty figures are out.
The BBC has been speaking to young parents in our Best Beginning group in Motherwell about the real impact of the cost of living crisis.
๐บ Tune in BBC Reporting Scotland tonight, 6.30pm.
@cpagscotland.bsky.social
Infuriating watching politicians try to explain away an increase in children in poverty. A values led, compassionate and informed approach would have dismissed any increase in child poverty as both indefensible and untenable.
26.03.2025 22:49 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 3 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0We acknowledge the slight reduction in child poverty however, figures remain significantly above the interim target. @ScotGov must do more to prioritise ending child poverty to meet targets. Too many children in Scotland are still growing up in poverty ๐ www.aberlour.org.uk/news-item/ab...
27.03.2025 14:07 โ ๐ 9 ๐ 5 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0PRESS RELEASE Scottish policies โare working to shift the dial on child povertyโ say campaigners as official statistics show child poverty falling. bit.ly/41L0qjX
27.03.2025 11:07 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 5 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 2We also need to do more to create flexible jobs for parents, increase the supply of affordable childcare and roll out community based family services that support children to get a decent start & set them up for a better future (4/4)
27.03.2025 14:21 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Social security, esp the SCP, is supporting families. There is no running away from the fact this essential public service is needed & should go further. Itโs the backbone to a comprehensive plan to end child poverty (3/4)
27.03.2025 14:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0It is welcome to see child poverty reducing for the first time in years, especially in the face of rising poverty across the UK. Things have turned in the right direction. It gives us hope that policy & political choices in Scotland are working (2/4)
27.03.2025 14:21 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0We are deeply disappointed that the interim child poverty targets have been missed. Too many families are still struggling to make ends meet. We simply need Holyrood & Westminster to do more for children (1/4)
27.03.2025 14:21 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0๐จ BREAKING: Child poverty has hit a new record high in the UK.
These figures are a source of national shame. The rise in child poverty to 4.5 million is a direct consequence of political choices.

We fear child poverty levels will rise as a direct result of the welfare reforms announced today.
870k children live in families that receive PIP & 290k of these are already in poverty.
A reduction in income for families with a disabled parent means more children will suffer.
Proud to be hosting the Child Poverty Summit in Sheffield today, bringing together experts and people with lived experience of poverty to develop solutions that politicians can adopt to tackle this vital issue.
Let's get to work ๐ค

๐งตThe First Minister is right - we predict the gap will grow between child poverty rates in Scotland and England and Wales - to around 10 percentage points.
The gap is largely as a result of the Child Payment and the commitment to end the two child limit.
Shows the power of social security. 1/3

Budget.
Will it put us on the path to eradicating child poverty as the FM wants to?
Will the other parties push the Scottish Government on this?
How will we know if the budget is progress?
What sort of scale is needed?

worrying jump in levels of distrust of the Scottish Government: from 38 to 45% over year to 2023. Now as many people distrust as trust the Scottish Government (10% not sure).
Levels of trust matter, especially for taxation 1/

I had the pleasure of speaking about early learning and childcare in Scotland. We know that cost and lack of flexibility is still a major barrier for work, particularly for mothers. High quality childcare that flexes around the needs of low income families is needed: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
