Another day testing the limits of resilience.

The Alexandria NSF building was designed for the NSF merit review process (gold standard), complete with a floor devoted to panels.

Now we arenโ€™t allowed to have in person panels.

The loss of US science leadership will haunt this country for decades.

โ€œWhy Are We Funding This?โ€ Long-standing myths about โ€œsilly scienceโ€ have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.

My latest for American Scientist Magazine helps give scientists the tools to fight back against politicized charges that our research is silly or pointless- tools that will work whether youโ€™re asked โ€œwhy are we funding thisโ€ from your asshole uncle at Thanksgiving or an asshole US Senator.

New ancient fish species earliest known salmon ancestor A new paper published this week in the journal Papers in Paleontology has named three new species of fish from that time period, including a salmonid, dubbed Sivulliusalmo alaskensis.

The discovery of Sivulliusalmo alaskensis โ€” the genus is named from the Inupiaq and Latin words for โ€œto be firstโ€ and โ€œsalmon,โ€ respectively โ€” adds another 20 million years to the fossil history of the salmon family.

John Steinbeckโ€™s Western Flyer boat transformed into floating classroom on Monterey Bay Aboard the same fishing vessel Steinbeck used for his 1940 Sea of Cortez expedition, undergraduates studied science and literature while gaining a deeper appreciation for the ocean.

Over 80 years ago, author John Steinbeck voyaged to the Sea of Cortez on a trip that inspired one of his most celebrated works of nonfiction. The same boat from that expedition is now restored and serves as a classroom, immersing students in the science and stories of the sea.
