Another day testing the limits of resilience.
The Alexandria NSF building was designed for the NSF merit review process (gold standard), complete with a floor devoted to panels.
Now we arenโt allowed to have in person panels.
The loss of US science leadership will haunt this country for decades.

โWhy Are We Funding This?โ
Long-standing myths about โsilly scienceโ have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.
My latest for American Scientist Magazine helps give scientists the tools to fight back against politicized charges that our research is silly or pointless- tools that will work whether youโre asked โwhy are we funding thisโ from your asshole uncle at Thanksgiving or an asshole US Senator.

This "broken pie chart" is neat & new to me: Powerfully shows the slowdown in new NSF awards across areas.

New ancient fish species earliest known salmon ancestor
A new paper published this week in the journal Papers in Paleontology has named three new species of fish from that time period, including a salmonid, dubbed Sivulliusalmo alaskensis.
The discovery of Sivulliusalmo alaskensis โ the genus is named from the Inupiaq and Latin words for โto be firstโ and โsalmon,โ respectively โ adds another 20 million years to the fossil history of the salmon family.

Please use this form to submit information identifying specific NSF grants that have been cancelled for any reason after January 20, 2025.
We are tracking these grants to increase transparency, organize affected PIs, and facilitate responses, including via litigation. Please share the form as widely as possible with your networks.
We are actively building a pipeline to organize these terminations and will soon have a tracker akin to our NIH grant tracker at https://airtable.com/appjhyo9NTvJLocRy/shrNto1NNp9eJlgpA
WE WILL NOT DISCLOSE THE IDENTITY OF ANYONE WHO USES THIS FORM TO PROVIDE INFORMATION. We will keep your identity confidential.
These resources are maintained by Noam Ross of rOpenSci and Scott Delaney of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, with input and support from additional volunteers. For any questions, please contact Scott Delaney on Signal (sdelaney.84).
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE!
๐จReport your NSF grant terminations! ๐จ
We are starting to collect information on NSF grant terminations to create a shared resource as we have for NIH. The more information we collect, the more we can organize, advocate, and fight back! Please share widely!

"Effective today, sources tell Science, NSFโs division of grants & awards is returning all grant proposals previously approved for funding and awaiting final signoff to program officers who oversaw the initial review. In the meantime, according to those sources, NSF will not make any new awards."

NSF slashes prestigious PhD fellowship awards by half
US National Science Foundation announces lowest number of Graduate Research Fellowship Programme recipients in 15 years.
Itโs devastating to see the number of GRFP awards cut in half. These are already so competitive to get. My heart goes out to my students and all the others that put their hearts into their applications and deserved this award.

John Steinbeckโs Western Flyer boat transformed into floating classroom on Monterey Bay
Aboard the same fishing vessel Steinbeck used for his 1940 Sea of Cortez expedition, undergraduates studied science and literature while gaining a deeper appreciation for the ocean.
Over 80 years ago, author John Steinbeck voyaged to the Sea of Cortez on a trip that inspired one of his most celebrated works of nonfiction. The same boat from that expedition is now restored and serves as a classroom, immersing students in the science and stories of the sea.
