A closer look at dumpling laying down , he has a slight amount of torsion in his from from his torso being parallel to the ground he is on and the ~30 degree angle his pelvis has in respect to the ground. Behind him are autumnal trees that I’m not happy with since they drown out dumpys vibrant orange coat to make him look too red

More of my experimenting , I also added a close up view to see more of the dumpy 👀 I played around with the addition of more colors, but still don’t think they were use properly lol

Very likely 18” x 8” or close to a 2:1 ratio, ideally I’d make everything squares since it’s less decisions I have to make. That being said, having a long piece is better for the composition and I’m not going to work against my reference when I don’t have to.

Oh what a sacred and terrible air ~ im a sucker for any secondary sources of media ( just like the flavor text books in Skyrim!) and I think It’s about a ~ 2 hour read so it’s pretty doable. I listened to it while on a work field trip on YouTube so there’s some good audio of it out there too.

The brush and tongue blep are a nice touch. I like the gentle giant archetype so giving dumpling an imposing figure with a dash of bashfulness is really cute to me.

I’m slowly getting there,I think I’m over working the piece, but it’s still good practice, while I could give it a more cubist feel by breaking more rules, honing in on value and geometric approximations is what I like the most— think Leger’s “nudes in the forest” though I’m far from it 😅

I can only imagine why :3 polar bears are a great subject to work with, and any time I have the option of adding a “bearish” figure to the piece, I’m down for it!

I don’t plan on doing com’s any time soon, though the gears have turned in my head , I think I’d rather keep the endeavor as a creative outlet rather than a side hustle. There are some VERY niche edge cases where I would but that’s like “ plein air fursuit portrait painting on a hiking pull off “

For as messy and space consuming as physical media is I still love the process and the end product.

I do my best with LEDs in my kitchen but it’s hard to beat

The background is a small green tree still retaining much of its cubic shape, followed by dabbles of a blue sky and autumn foliage in the far background

The vibe was suppose to be more follow me friendo ~ but the eyes came out a little more angry, a friend commented saying “are you not entertained ? “ which fits the expression much more

Dumpling underneath the erdtree, I tried out another paper which likes to warp much more than expected , painting still came out well though

Well so far my most adventurous color that I like so far is Naples yellow 🤣, so I think we are all going to have to wait a while

Not my best render but that’s part of the experimentation, I think I thinned out the paint too much and it was quickly became a fight to keep planes of form from becoming colorful mud. I still have the original sketch as insurance so I’m likely to try this one again

Here’s the final rendering of my were polar bear from last year , an alt is up on FA too~ I should be posting some tradition oil paints soon too since I have some cheap materials from Joann’s liquidation sale.

A slightly more cubist maned wolf named dumpling than my usual style. While most of the piece is overworked and displays too complex of a geometry for the desired outcome, the pants and love handles contain the level of abstraction o was going for

My scaffolding block out for the painting , honestly there’s still a lot of cubist potential here I just need to be more direct with the shading to contort forms and stick with grey scale . The sketch is nothing more than straight lines focusing on the boundaries of value change from my reference photos

A friend ask me to try out cubism since my sketches are really blocky so here is a slightly more cubist dumpling , then how I normally paint

Thanks for the encouragement! And the comparison between paper sketch and final render does feel powerful , while I think the face deserves its own attention, seeing the edges of the “blocks” that didn’t get honed down to a curved form is a nice artifact of its origin
