Two historical connections worth pointing out here:
1) Charlie Beresford (the one surviving member of the naval detachment) ends up being an important admiral, most notably as Mr Dreadnought Jackie Fisher’s main antagonist.
2) The Mahdi’s descendants include Siddig el Fadl, aka Dr Bashir on DS9
There are some operational advantages to modern diesel AIP subs, but they’re a *very* different animal than WW2 diesel tubs
