Iโ€™m a TMS technician and yeah: a Neurostar TMS machine has a Windows computer running it, while a Brainsway TMS machine has a Linux computer running it. The huge capacitors and magnets make them TMS machines, but without the computers underneath neither can do shit.

Like most problems with AI this too is not a problem with AI it's a problem with the mad gold rush around AI.

I have my issues with LLM and generative AI, but the really big problems are very much human behaviour, exploitation and public funding and regulatory capture by big capital.

I think this is true. I also think that people expect that if AI can perform the task of coding then it can perform any task which they intuit to be easier than coding.

People talk about this stuff in terms of how much it'll suck for gaming and I hate to inform you how many MRI machines, X-Rays, all sorts of other vital machinery are just a Windows IoT Edition PC in a beige plastic box with a big magnet/accelerator/whatever attached.

The Russo-Japanese War was the first major conflict in history that saw more deaths in combat than deaths by disease.

Realistically, if you were sent to war any time before WW1, you were more likely to shit yourself to death than die at the hands of the enemy.

I think Vader is an example of someone who cannot defeat plot armor, something more powerful than the Dark Side of the Force

"So imagine Colin Powell is aetting readv to
invade Iraq, and for some reason he has this
monk hanging around him. No one reallv knows
why this monk is hanging around, but he's
Cheney's right hand man, and has some
mysterious history with him so has to be treated
respectfully. While the Joint Chiefs Of Staff are
discussing invasion plans, the monk says "all your
weapons of war are insignificant compared to
shaolin kung fu" So general Petraues is like "ok
MR Miyagi, but grownups are talking'

And then the monk hadoukens him.

a thing I just realized about the Flashman books is that he really benefits from dueling becoming socially unacceptable as the nineteenth century progresses: in the first book he faces the prospect of two duels, one of which he cheats in and the other forces him into marriage.

Suspect a lot of the sudden pleas for urgency to take AI seriously can be understood as anxiety in people whose jobs have any significant exposure to coding.

One thing that examples like this show is that this mode of thinking is out the window with LLMs. In traditional computing world, when output is produced, it means your instructions were followed and, as long as your instructions were right, the output is correct. Not so with LLMs, evidently.

long term automation is always good but right now the political preference across developed democracies is "no more immigration" and "no inflation ever" which adds up to automating mundane menial tasks to make more time for mundane menial tasks that are also gross and humiliating

Arguments that strategic bombing of Germany "didn't work" or that it "didn't reduce production" are economically illiterate. If it was so useless why did Germany spend the majority of its war budget (since anti-aircraft shells were a majority of ammunition produced) defending against it?

There are, of course, a lot of reasonable objections to what they are doing and how they are doing it, but from the vantage point of 2026 its behavior that needs to be rewarded for others to emulate it

They are doing something that is far harder than any other AI company right now -- making a system that controls hardware in unforgiving physical conditions, under a thicket of regulations, and they have been doing it without you needing to see their CEO mouthing off in the news every day
