Teotihuacano Knappers

Private commision, illustration of Teotihuacano obsidian knappers from the barrio of Tlajinga.

Did the art recap thing for 2024, a few interesting things here and there!

Lady 10 Deer Jaguar Quechquemitl was a Mixtec princess & later queen. I put a chihuahua in this pic in honour of my dog Hazel. The work of @zotz.bsky.social was helpful for me in reconstructing a Mixtec noblewoman.

Tonatiuh, the fifth sun. At first I didn't like him cause he has this arrogant aura around, but knowing his backstory made me fall for him, haha.

A screencap of Chel from the animated film, the Road to El Dorado is seen on the left. On the right, is the same screencap but edited to make her character design more historically accurate. Replacing the loincloth (a male garment) with a skirt as seen in the codices. And removing the tube top which did not exist. Her head shape was changed to show cranial modification, and she was given a headband. In addition, red paint is added on her lips and arms. A beaded jade necklace was also added to her to match her bracelets.

A couple years ago I made a more historically accurate edit (on the right) of Chel from Road to El Dorado for fun. Looking at the late postclassic Maya. And yes, I am aware that the legend may have been inspired by the Muisca, but the culture in the film was clearly modeled after the Maya.

Color sketches of Maya court ladies. The first has red hair and a backpiece, she also wears jade jewelry and a sheer decorated yellow huipil with a skirt underneath. The one in the back has her hair loose and holds a macaw feather fan. The third wears a large blue huipil with a low neckline. All of them have red and white face paint.

Another old one, some court ladies based on late classic Maya vessels. These were concepts for a short comic (40 pages) set in Tikal around the reign of Yik'in Chan K'awiil. Alas it never materialized but one day, perhaps I can revisit it. It also would have been my longest comic all in full color.

Huitzilopochtli, covered in blood, is on his knees worshiping Coatlicue. Both lie beneath the light the moon provides.

Before becoming Topiltzin, Quetzalcoatl looked alot like his brother Tezcatlipoca. After his life as Topiltzin, Quetz refused to go back to his original appearance.

According to him, the way he looks now is a better reflection of his own heart. 💚 #oc

The last year I had the opportunity to draw a design for Tezcatlipoca, since I was invited to a collab. I wanted to represent the most of his iconography, and being "creative" in some way.

I love this god so much, even if I still need to know a lot about him.
