19th century feather-quill furniture built for dollhouses. This features two small chairs, one larger, a fainting couch and ottoman. Most of the feather quills are cut in a zigzag design.

My senior film still isn’t complete because I’m only one guy who has to work to survive. But I am proud of the fact that I never have and never will use generative ai in my work. Every single aspect of my films is intentional, down to the furniture I conceptualized and built in blender. (read alt)

I really do want to highlight that the same person who said and did these things to me and my friends in Hiveworks makes one of the softest, cutest webcomics out there.

That fact has made me mad, sad, and confused for a long time.

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best. It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

All this to say that CEOs do not grasp the value of research and concept art and collecting inspiration out in the field to store away for later. They think they can press a button and the subpar slop that gets on their hands is a good enough replacement.

The *very first* time I saw that antique dollhouse furniture, long before I had a plan for my senior film, it was my partner who pointed it out to me, saying something like “this would be great for your spider ocs”. I agreed, took photos and when the time came, I remembered them.

Research and conceptualization are fundamental to the artistic process. It’s not just something you can plug into a machine who spits out congealed, plagiarized slop. It takes a human mind to explore and question and pursue.

I thoroughly researched antique dollhouse furniture, even visiting the national museum of toys and miniatures who had a few of these types on display. I researched native insect species to the uk, I bought books on arthropod anatomy to better understand my characters.

I’m an animator. I have a degree. Over the course of my schoolwork, I’ve developed multiple films to varying levels of completion. The most fundamental part of creation is iteration. I went through multiple endings for my senior film, and landed on the perfect ending with only a month to spare.
