Why the mighty Himalayas are getting harder and harder to see Severe air pollution is obscuring visibility of the highest mountain peaks on Earth, hitting tourism hard.

Experts believe the Himalayas are probably the worst affected mountain range in the world given their location in a populous &polluted region. This could mean the scintillating view of the Himalayas could now largely be limited to photographs, paintings and postcards.

The #TrumpAdministration seems to see places like #Ukraine and #Greenland as areas to use innovative methods to add to its supply chain.

"To counter China's growing hold on the global supply chain," the US House Armed Services Committee during #Biden's administration had said "it is essential that the #US secured its own innovative supply of critical and strategic minerals."

It also predominantly produces #rareearthelements, and maintains a tight grip on key metals around the world, with ownership of major mines in #Africa, #Asia and #SouthAmerica.

Having honed processing technologies & expertise over decades, #China currently controls 100% of the refined supply of natural #graphite and #dysprosium, 70% of #cobalt & almost 60% of all processed #lithium and #manganese, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency.

That drop is one of the major causes of the slowing down of global #cleanenergy growth.

Experts say Chinese dominance of critical minerals, including rare earth elements, is the main factor, largely due to #US-China #geopolitics.

Trump has announced a major push for expansion of AI infrastructure in his country. This will need a huge supply of #criticalminerals - mainly #copper, #silicon, #palladium and #rareearthelements.

And supply of critical minerals has already begun to decline.

But at the same time, he wants to secure critical minerals - that are key for #cleanenergy transition - from wherever he can.
However, such minerals are also the building blocs for consumer electronics, military & navigation equipment, & - most importantly - #AI data centres.
