Inspectors General provide important oversight and investigate fraud, waste, and abuse. Democracies need oversight to prevent abuses in power. Removing the watchdogs is one more aspect of authoritarianism.

A key component of authoritarianism is hiding government spending from the public. In the 60's and 70's the US implemented sunshine laws, as transparency is a fundamental to functioning democracies.
