I suspect it’s nothing more than something Trump can point to and claim “look how powerful America is. And now we own the moon.”

I’d also note that during the Cold War, the loons of the day discussed detonating a nuclear bomb on the moon, just to show the Soviets that we could.

I think that’s what they want — fascists generally don’t appreciate their citizens leaving.

I realize this is mostly rhetorical, but if we don’t roll this back soon, it will cost us everything.

But despite my experiences, most Americans have not felt those First amendment infringements. And even my experience wasn’t because I was targeted by the govt directly (although some involved were govt adjacent).

Probably best to check your assumptions. I’ve been doxxed, threatened and targeted in a smear campaign by MAGA world. People were driving by my house and pulling into my driveway. I’m still in counseling, but please tell me how I’m “privileged and haven’t been impacted”?

All of those things are bad.

Some have more significance to creating an enduring authoritarian state than do others.

People without the credentials and training to understand the consequences of their policies should never get to lead government agencies.

Anyone who thinks this is a good idea is a fool.

That’s why creating an “indicators” list is important. When will we be at that point? See list. It may seem arbitrary but it’s not — such a list would include the things scholars and analysts who study authoritarianism cite as warning, for example.

You acknowledge above that “it will get worse.” So you agree it will grow.

If we were fully autocratic they’d have come for us already. Most of us don’t yet see infringement on our first amendment rights. But there will be a tipping point when it becomes much more difficult to roll back autocracy.

They need to wake up and take America’s side before we become Germany 1941.
