Rushanara Ali: "The average monthly private rent in London increased by 9.7% in the last year and is over one and a half times higher than the average monthly rent in England"

At the time people probably assumed Ali meant this was a bad thing. It turns out she was boasting!

Today Angela Rayner is meeting the victorious Lionesses in London, while Keir Starmer is in Scotland to see Donald Trump. Sometimes being the boss has its downsides.

As a GP, I am not allowed to receive a pen or post-it note pad from a pharmaceutical company rep!

Govt banned them in case I was influenced to prescribe medications.

This should also be banned?

Influence being bought in Govt?

Patients should influence not the healthy & wealthy

Just to be completely clear - this British Army Vet was NOT forced out of military housing to accommodate Afghans - who, by the way, put their own lives at risk to support and protect British soldiers.

Just ever more rage-baiting by Matt!

The left is rallying against war with Iran They remember the rush to war in Iraq all too well.

Zack Polanski, @TheGreenParty said: “Starmer claims to support de-escalation – yet continues to back a government committing genocide in Gaza, arms its military, shares intelligence, and now refuses to rule out dragging us into another catastrophic war.”

The Prime Minister imitating Enoch Powell’s ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech is sickening.

That speech fuelled decades of racism and division. Echoing it today is a disgrace. It adds to anti-migrant rhetoric that puts lives at risk.

Shame on you, Keir Starmer.

OK now that I've read the white paper recommendations I'd say closing the care system to overseas recruitment is the single most substantive system change.

That can only plausibly work if salaries go up significantly.

I haven’t asked you because I can’t be bothered to look. I’ve asked because quite simply, there isn’t one, which I’m sure you know which is why you don’t want to say anything.

So please tell me Stewart, what are the proposals to fill the void in social care staffing that will be left by stopping the care worker visa scheme?

11.05.2025 16:07 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

It’s easier to compete when you are able to pay them more. As opposed to minimum wage

We are about to get a very painful lesson in how much we rely on young people from overseas to look after our aging population.

So please tell me where the plan in to play British care workers a decent wage to incentivise retention and recruitment?

11.05.2025 14:09 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Yes, absolutely

11.05.2025 14:07 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

Taking away carer visas before you have put place a plan to deal with the care recruitment problem is being done purely to attempt to improve immigration numbers to placate the Reform voters. And yes in my opinion, yes it is terrible. Thus is only going to exacerbate the social care staffing crisis.

So why have a government that’s bean in office for 10 months as well as opposition planning time, have no plan for social care. No plan for increasing wages so the exploitation can stop?

11.05.2025 11:55 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

So why is the government planning to do nothing about it. By the way, I train care staff. To start the job requires carrying out a number of courses (mandatory training). It also requires skills that can’t necessarily be taught. The status of care staff is not helped when government act as true do.

11.05.2025 11:50 — 👍 3    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

But they are stopping the import of Labour but not incentivising the recruitment of UK born staff but offering better wages and status. It’s the worst of all worlds.
