Back when I was still an architecture student, @cnunewurbanism.bsky.social was helping the Hope VI program build community for people who need it most. We still are, and every day I see more evidence of our impact, including the research out tonight encouraging us to keep investing in place:

Don made an extraordinary difference in this world by elevating what should be common sense, and I think that if we could do anything to honor his impact, it would be to similarly find our own way to spread sense that is far too uncommon.

50 Reasons Why Everyone Should Want More Walkable Streets From making you live longer to making cities more resilient: If you want a reason to make your city more walkable, it's in here.

β€œSomeone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath

1/4 PSA from those of us going into a 4th day of a public-safety power shutdown east of the LA fires πŸ”₯ due to high winds, dry veg, & power lines in super high fire hazard areas in our neighborhood. Solar panels & backup systems like Tesla Power Walls, do not guarantee all bases covered. 🧡

I agree, it’s fundamental. While important for implementation, focusing solely on the right housing product misses the bigger picture: families need neighborhoods, and the complete list of daily needs, services (schools!) that support children’s needs as well as adults.

This is an important point, one that I know CNU has had sessions about before but is ripe in the 2025 host city - Providence. The city has focused on adaptive reuse of historic (former office/commercial) buildings into micro units there, but are families being encouraged/accommodated too?

Parking lots turn streets into miserable places to walk.

New study finds that parking lots "negatively - and substantially - impact walkability; their objective walkability score is half that of other road segments."
