A lot of new and original films are coming out actually. You just have to reach out a bit further than Hollywood. Try watching more international or indie films. A lot of original stuff out there!

Do you recommend reading Orwell's 1984 first though? Recently saw a new documentary about him, "Orwell 2 + 2 = 5" which really made me want to check out his books. Great documentary. Look out for it when it comes out.
