It’s an absurdity to think it would protect children to limit their access to science and wonder and learning about our world’s beautiful diversity. We must #endbookbans and support diverse voices in #kidlit.

I’m pregnant and drove across 3countries yday. For most of it,lil homie slept. At some point,he started kicking and dancing in my tummy.I realised it was exactly when we were passing the hospital in which my mum almost lost me decades before.Lil homie is happy I’m earthside and he gets to be here too.

My nephew once suggested driving through town and throwing lots of copies out of the car window to make people happy. That, together with screaming nice things at everyone. Might be worth a try!

In the Belgian city I lived in at the time, people put stuffed toys (mainly teddy bears) in the windows for children to spot on their daily neighbourhood walks. One family made beautiful little scenes with their resident Tigger.

I share them with my (writing) friends, critique group etc! Instead of lamenting over rejections or the milestones I have yet to reach, I try to intentionally speak about all that is working out. I also have a celebration jar in which I collect each little achievement on a piece of colourful paper

Celebrate all the wins, even the tiniest. Take one step at a time. When it gets tough, remind yourself why you feel blessed to be able to walk this path. And most importantly - build community wherever you can (like here!). Wishing you all the very best for this new adventure ✨

after spinal surgery. Do you mind sharing where you put your keyboard and what positions you work in like that?

I forgot that social media could be fun. While trying to endure an apocalyptic heatwave while pregnant, I’ve been finding hope on here, reading about Octavia Butler’s beautiful mind (yday was the day of the parable 🀯), and Tolkien’s deep understanding of human nature. #bluesky

Here’s what I tell my student when they express this anxiety:

Write in community along the way and your community will be there to support you further down the path too.

Share your work with friends. Go to readings and cheer on peers and mentors. Activate yourself as a literary citizen.

I immediately added this to my summer reading list. Grown-ups have much to learn from children, and also from children’s books. Writing for and with children has taught me much of what I know about this world ✨

Nothing pleases me more than seeing the joy and comfort of Wallace the former stray. I think of him shivering and injured, angry and semi feral, last January… and now he cuddles and plays and just enjoys his life. I basically want this for everyoneβ€”May we all be warm and well fed.

EXERCISE! It’s essential, especially for the likes of us who often live/work sedentary lives.
I walk 3-4 miles a day, and not only is it great cardio, but it jazzes my brain so that I have written the majority of my graphic novels on those walks!

Dear Writer, find the joy in your story. Love, Kayleigh

Dear Writer,

Remember to find the joy in your story.

Deadlines, word counts, and other expectations (whether they’ve been set by others or ourselves) can get in the way of what made us fall in love with writing in the first place. Don’t let pressure ruin the process for you.

Enjoy your . . .

Do any other #kidlit authors have a problem with the phrasing β€œin the querying trenches”? It makes me think of homesick, cold, hungry teenage boys in mud holes, caught up in tragic, atrocious wars. Querying can be a lonely journey indeed, but is there a more pacifist term to describe the struggle?
