πŸ“’ Introducing Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, the Oriental Weatherfish.
πŸ’₯ This #InvasiveAlienSpecies has the unusual ability to reproduce clonally.
🐠 It can also reduce aquatic insect biodiversity and compete with native fish for food and spawning areas, impacting local ecosystems.

🐌 Today's #InvasiveAlienSpecies is Marisa cornuarietis, the Giant Ramshorn Snail.
πŸ”΄ It is an aggressive scavenger capable of consuming most vegetation indiscriminately in areas where it is abundant.
🟀 It can also reproduce rapidly, contributing to its significant impact.

πŸ¦€ Our next #InvasiveAlienSpecies is Faxonius immunis, the Calico Crayfish
🌊 It may impact aquatic invertebrate communities and outcompete native species where introduced.
πŸ”΄It is also a carrier of pathogens, and its burrowing activity has the potential to damage infrastructure

The African Clawed Frog

The African Clawed Frog

Spotlight: The American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) 🐸

It can leap nearly six feet in a single boundβ€”almost 10x its body lengthβ€”and preys on everything from native frogs to birds and even bats.

#GuardIAS is using advanced eDNA to track its spread.

🌿 This past month, we hosted PhD student Gorgias Aikpon (Univ. of Abomey-Calavi, Benin)! His PhD explores the ecology, distribution & management of two invasive plants: Jack in the Bush and Pignut.

During his stay, he developed species distribution models to predict their potential distributions. πŸ—ΊοΈ

🌿 Our next #InvasiveAlienSpecies is Crassula helmsii, the New Zealand Pygmyweed.
It can rapidly overgrow ponds through asexual reproduction and does not die back in winter.
🌱Due to its persistent growth, it outcompetes other plants for light and resources, potentially lowering water oxygenation.

🐌 Today's #InvasiveAlienSpecies is Cipangopaludina chinensis, the Chinese Mystery Snail.
🟒 It can outcompete many native snails, alter water quality and algae diversity, and act as a potential parasite host.
βšͺ There are also concerns about it clogging water pipes and attacking fish eggs.

πŸ‘‰ Meet Cherax destructor, the Common Yabby.
🐚 This #InvasiveAlienSpecies is a generalist, adaptive, and opportunistic omnivore that can quickly invade new areas and outcompete other crayfish.
🟀 It's a prolific breeder, and its burrowing activities can cause damage to riverbanks and infrastructure.

πŸ”Ž The #InvasiveAlienSpecies we focus on today is Cervus nippon, the Sika Deer.
🦌 Overgrazing by these deer can lead to substantial environmental and economic damage, particularly to crops.
πŸ”΄ They are quite aggressive, directly competing and sometimes even hybridising with native red deer.

The Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii)

This crayfish can travel across dry land to find new rivers to invade.
It’s a major threat, known for damaging infrastructure with its burrows & carrying crayfish plague. The #GuardIAS project is tracking its spread.

🦫 The next #InvasiveAlienSpecies of Union concern is the Castor canadensis, or the American Beaver.

GuardIAS is a three-year Horizon Europe project that started on January 1, 2025, which brings together a wide range of stakeholders and experts in Invasive Alien Species (IAS) management.

The Marbled Crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) is a high-risk invasive species causing concern across Europe. As a Species of Union Concern, it is being monitored for its rapid spread in rivers, lakes, and wetlands.

🐜 Introducing Brachyponera chinensis, the Asian Needle Ant.
