Graphical abstract shows phylogeny of Pholidichthys
The origin of cichlids: The controversial phylogenomics of the convict fish, Pholidichthys leucotaenia
Very interesting. Will have to read in more detail later.
"... previous claims of a close evolutionary relationship between Pholidichthys and cichlids, while possible, are premature and warrant re-evaluation..."

Helsinki just went a full year without a single traffic death
The capital city is Finnishโed with car-related fatalities.
โHelsinki hasnโt registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past yearโฆCiting data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a carโs speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinkiโs residential areas and city center in 2021.โ

A chain of salps, which are mostly translucent except for the organ at the bottom (I don't know what that is). There are two orange octopuses with white tentacles on the left and lower middle of the picture. There's a blurred thing which is probably a crustacean of some kind in the middle, and a small fish to the right of that. All of the passengers are either on or inside the salps - it's hard to tell which since they're almost completely transparent.

Salps serve as shelter for many other critters. This is part of a much longer chain of salps; there's two octopuses, a juvenile fish and what I think is an amphipod in this photo from a blackwater dive in Balayan Bay, Anilao

Many do, the P. sauvagei arenโt the problem in this tank, but their tankmates are West African tilapias that are herbivores, itโs mostly Cryptocoryne that survive..

Major Chinese funder to stop paying fees for 30 pricey open-access journals
Move comes amid effort to grow the countryโs own journals
Chinese Academy of Sciences plans on stopping using public funds to cover APC of expensive journals and caps publishing in them. To stimulate publications in considerably cheaper national papers.

An extremely cool fossil of a bird head. Its eye and feathering are preserved as dark carbon traces.
Hive mind: Does anyone know if this Fur Formation bird fossil (MGUH 28.929) has been identified? All it's referred to as online and in papers is "bird head", which is not helpful.

A little yellow and brown frog in the groove in the middle of a vibrant green Pandanus frond, its feet splayed to the side to brace it in place.
Platypelis tuberifera always remind me of a rockclimber bridging a chimney, the way they sit in the groove of Pandanus fronds. Such charming frogs! And we know so very little about their ecology. For instance, as far as I know nobody has ever found their eggs or tadpoles! ๐งช๐ธ๐ฒ๐ฌ

The British Museum photo shows a six-sided, cube-shaped die carved from rock crystal on a grey surface. The six sides are numbered one to six. The numbers are represented by circular incised markings, which comprise of a dark outer ring with a dark dot at the centre. Length: 9 - 13 millimetres, width: 9 - 13 millimetres. Display lighting casts a shadow beneath the die.
Timeless design!
