'It's one of the least known': A remote and dangerous Amazon river finally spills its secrets Legend has it that the Santiago river used to swallow the canoe of anyone trying to explore it. Now an indigenous community is discovering surprising species in its waters.

"Freshwater fish, such as those in the Amazon, are seriously threatened. Their populations have declined by 81% in the last 50 years and in Latin America alone, they have declined by 91%." 🌎 www.bbc.com/future/artic...

Phyllanthoid branching evolved only once but has been lost several times. Some species have kept the branching but ditched the leaves. Phyllanthus angustifolius of the Antilles has cladodes (flattened, photosynthetic branches). #Phyllanthaceae #TropicalBotany #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Fragmented remains of a bronze sword laid out on a dark surface, its blade hacked into multiple pieces. The broken segments show long, parallel ridges characteristic of the original blade, along with sections of the hilt and guard.

An intentionally destroyed #BronzeAge #sword found in a burial at Blaubeuren-Asch. Bronze Age weapons deposited in burials were often bent or hacked into pieces before placed into the grave, in this way they 'died' with the owner. Dating 9th century BC.

Thinking abut the unique terminal swords on the ends of dacentrurine stegosaur tails on this #FossilFriday . They really do seem to fully fuse over the tip of tail. How to reconstruct (no evidence for parascapula spines) and how many taxa? Is Wyoming's Alcocasaurus a dacentrurine?

OK, that Lias coprolite maybe isn't the most aesthetically pleasing example for #FossilFriday. In fact it looks a bit s**t. So instead here's some nice-looking Scottish coprolites from the Carboniferous Wardie Shales near Edinburgh which Buckland had made into a table. It's now in Lyme Regis Museum.

A large Atlantic Giant Grouper. Grouper are at risk of size reductions due to overfishing

Today is World Fisheries Day, so for #FishOfTheWeek let's talk about a fisheries issue that is becoming more and more common, reductions in size of fishes due to fishing pressure. This may seem like a small issue but is in fact a major problem for many reasons

This is a pinkeye goby (Bryaninops natans) from Anilao. Or maybe a purple-eye goby, depending on who you listen to. I think it's more pink :)

Boarfish typically live in very deep water. They have a protrusible, tube-like mouth for pulling small invertebrates from the seabed and are often found in shoals over rocky or sandy bottoms in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and other oceans.
