The meeting invites from complete strangers takes the cake for me!

Historically they mostly used sherry transport casks, so not even the casks used for making sherry. There are some bodega cask bottlings that come up, but they're few. Finishing in ex-bourbon/rum barrels is more common because conglomerates manage barrel programs across multiple distilleries.

Thanks for sharing! Now if we can just get the response time down. My team is so hyped to ship a local model

This is so weird, I wouldn't even know what to do with it. It speaks to a kind of cognitive laziness where you just want to hand off knowledge acquisition and decision making to someone else.

We knew this when people started mistaking sensor data for intelligence. eg the sliding door _knows_ when you're approaching. It's partially our fault because we let marketing teams lead with these messages.

If you think A.I. will solve your problems, you don't understand technology and you don't understand your problems.

No doubt there is some level of cronyism, but they've also been willing to work in places some have eschewed. They haven't cared about popularity. They've proven forward deployed engineers is a great delivery model and that platform lock-in isn't a boogyman at government and enterprise scale.

Palantir tops $1 billion in revenue for the first time, boosts guidance Palantir surpassed Wall Street's estimates and lifted its full-year outlook

Palantir is on track for a projected annual revenue above $4 billion, outperforming both Databricks and Snowflake which have more customers and twice as many employees. Palantir has no ecosystem, no open standards posture, no developer community, and almost zero visibility in the data community

This is a good but expensive problem to have. Ikea shelves will bow over time because they're made out of straight pine planks that flex with the weight. More expensive bookshelves, like Room & Board Copenhagen, are laminate over MDF to prevent bowing.

I'm pretty excited about the release of this book and have it on order. It's not often I see books that tie together my interest streams in both human cognition and rationality and data driven decision making, especially ones drawing on the limits of our mathematical models. #databs

This is the kind of shit people say when they’re way down the rabbit hole. College students struggle with fundamentals like reading a book, constructing an argument, critical thinking, ethical reasoning, but sure let’s make sure they all know machine learning.

Sometimes I forget streamer fishers are a different breed. Teaching my wife to fly fish we’ve switched from talking about dry flies like Caddis and Parachute Adam’s, to streamers like Sex Dungeon, Butt Monkey, and Silk Kitty.

Discovered earlier this year that Madewell has men's raw selvedge jean for well under $200. Surprised because I didn't even know Madewell made men's jeans. Madewell uses Japanese Kaihara mill denim unlike Raliegh Denim's Cone mill denim from here in NC.

Read the whole thread just to see if Raleigh Denim would come in for a mention and Derek did not disappoint. $300-$400 is a lot to pay of a pair of jeans, but you have to amortize the cost of years. The biggest mistake I see people make is just washing their jeans to frequently.

Philosophers from Plato on have seen ambition as primarily a vice, though some allow that it can be moderated and properly directed.

Numbers move fast. We turned on GitHub Copilot for our whole team and let it run for a bit because relatively cheap. Turned it off this month because everyone on the team has moved to Claude Code, which is indeed superior.

We've been hosting these low-key data meetups for about two years now. Always delightful mix of data practitioners of every stripe, software engineers, and startup founders. Last night I chatted with a research physicist, a student just launching her career, and a guy working on G-Meet.

Everyone is telling the same story wrt Iceberg, native integration β€œwithout transforming or duplicating data” but then talk about their materialized views and caching. Pretty sure that mv transform and duplicate the data. Just saw the same msg from CelerData (Star Rocks)
