Today, @lizhare.bsky.social gave a spectacular talk at the Big Team Science Conf about the peer review software resources developed by @ropensci.org and how she learned about them during the Champions program.

The slide with the unexpected benefits is my favorite part of the entire presentation!

Horizontal bar chart showing total events by type, ordered from highest to lowest. Course dominates with 192 events, followed by Invited Talk with 73 events, and Regular Talk with 63 events. Conference has 35 events, Panel 25, Podcast 22, Keynote and Exhibition each 19, Coworking 13, Community Call 12, Lightning talk 10, and Book Club 8. The three smallest categories—Hackathon, Sponsor Talk, and Contest—each have fewer than 5 events.

2/2 I also identified 15 event types that can be grouped in teaching & training (192), presentations & talks (191), large-scale events (58), and community & collaborative events (56). These events have been mainly in Spanish, then English, and only 11 in Portuguese (I hope to increase this number)

Line graph showing total events by year from 1993 to 2025. The trend begins at approximately 2 events in 1993, remains relatively flat with minor fluctuations between 2-8 events through 2015, then shows dramatic growth starting in 2016. Events increase from about 12 in 2016 to a peak of 61 events in 2022, with some volatility including a notable dip to 19 events in 2018. After the 2022 peak, there is a sharp decline to 23 events by 2025, even this can increase as the year is still going.

Doing spring cleaning in my #GitHub repo:

- deleting all the repos that I created during my teaching

- deleting all the unused forks

- adding topics to my repos so I can filter and find them more easily

What do you do to maintain a tidy GitHub?

R-Universe by @rOpenSci is an extremely useful project.

My latest R package, {pmtiles}, is not a good fit for CRAN as it bundles a pre-compiled Go library.

With R-Universe, I was able to get installable cross-platform binaries built in hours!

Running an effective Code of Conduct committee is essential to building a welcome, inclusive community. But it's demanding, complex work to do well. So @ropensci.org's team is sharing our CoC management materials with an open license. We get better by learning from each other.

#DLDday is coming, so I’m starting a thread over a few days.

DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) is all about spoken language. Words and sentences are tricky for people with DLD. And people don’t grow out of it.

Some notes on probability judgement – Notes from a data witch For the love of fuck, literally nobody thinks that 20% of the population is transgender. Please stop sharing that ridiculous YouGov statistic

Against my better instincts, I have written some notes on how human probability judgements work and what you should expect from surveys that ask people to guess what proportion of the population is transgender. I hope never to speak of this matter again
