Genuine privilege to be at Australia vs USA tonight - an absolutely cracking game of rugby.

The players put in a huge shift afterwards meeting and chatting with fans. Particular props to a hurting Samantha Wood, who nonetheless did the rounds and had a little natter with us. Did herself proud.

ARL 44 tanks during the Bastille Day parade

The ARL 44 medium tank was envisioned in 1944 as a way for France to return to tank design after a hiatus during German occupation. This tank was shown to the public #OTD in 1951 during the Bastille Day parade. #tanks #history

Captured Tiger II tank

The Germans were unsatisfied with the reliability of the King Tiger, particularly its gearbox. Bench trials of the PP33 gearbox that would be able to handle the tank's bulk were completed successfully #OTD in 1944, but it was never installed in a real tank. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

The bossman himself: the M4A3E2 Sherman β€œJumbo” assault tank, this one upgunned with the M1A1C 76mm gun instead of the usual M3 75mm I’ve always found it interesting that the Jumbo never got HVSS, with the prevailing argument was that the VVSS with duckbills was proficient enoughβ€” a minor fact which flew in the face of Patton stringent opposition to the practice in the Third Army.

A battered M4A3 (75)W. Not the single piece transmission cover, the M34A1 mantlet, the early high bustle T26 turret and T48 rubber chevron track.

An early M4. See the 57Β° slope of the front glacis vs. the steeper 47Β° degree of later versions. This one, like many of this type, had appliquΓ© armor welded in front of the driver and bow gunner bulges, as well as over the sponson plate. Also notable is the presence of the antenna mount to the left of the bow gunner, the early 3-part transmission cover and the low bustle turret. This tank is marked as the battalion commander’s tank of the 2nd battalion, 69th armor regiment.

No, it’s not an M60 AVRE (we don’t have Royal Engineers, sir). It’s an M728 combat engineer vehicle sporting a 165mm M135 mortar. My son said β€œit’s a construction vehicle that does war!”

Moving on to some Cold War examples. This period of Le Siècle Blindée really was the Wild West of tank design.
