The bossman himself: the M4A3E2 Sherman “Jumbo” assault tank, this one upgunned with the M1A1C 76mm gun instead of the usual M3 75mm I’ve always found it interesting that the Jumbo never got HVSS, with the prevailing argument was that the VVSS with duckbills was proficient enough— a minor fact which flew in the face of Patton stringent opposition to the practice in the Third Army.

A battered M4A3 (75)W. Not the single piece transmission cover, the M34A1 mantlet, the early high bustle T26 turret and T48 rubber chevron track.

M4 (105) assault tank. This howitzer armed example is rocking the field expedient “bocage buster” of the Culin type. No clue on the providence of said device, if it’s an original or reproduction. Note the M52 howitzer gun mantlet.

An early M4. See the 57° slope of the front glacis vs. the steeper 47° degree of later versions. This one, like many of this type, had appliqué armor welded in front of the driver and bow gunner bulges, as well as over the sponson plate. Also notable is the presence of the antenna mount to the left of the bow gunner, the early 3-part transmission cover and the low bustle turret. This tank is marked as the battalion commander’s tank of the 2nd battalion, 69th armor regiment.

No, it’s not an M60 AVRE (we don’t have Royal Engineers, sir). It’s an M728 combat engineer vehicle sporting a 165mm M135 mortar. My son said “it’s a construction vehicle that does war!”
