We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy. Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie’s family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children.

BREAKING: President Trump just signed an executive order to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education.

However, the President cannot get rid of a federal agency without Congress’ approval.

Learn about what the department does and how this order could impact students across the country. ⬇️

The Current State of Voting Rights

Thousands of voters have been purged from voter rolls across the country, and at least 10 states passed 19 restrictive voting laws in 2024 alone, including:

Georgia made it easier to challenge voter’s eligibility based on unreliable data

Louisiana banned anyone except immediate family from helping voters cast their ballots

Tennessee gave voters fewer days to request an absentee ballot

New Hampshire made voter ID requirements more strict

More than 300 bills making it harder to vote were introduced across the country in the last year:

Arizona is considering a ban on in-person early voting

Wisconsin passed a proposal to add a photo voter ID requirement to the state constitution

States like Indiana, Oklahoma, and Wyoming are making it harder for students to vote

Why we need the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act:

For decades, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 protected millions of voters from discrimination at the ballot box.

But in 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court got rid of those federal voting protections in the Shelby County v. Holder decision.

Within a decade, at least 29 states passed more than 100 voter suppression laws negatively impacting Black, Brown, and Indigenous voters.

The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would protect voters by bringing back the most important parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965:

- Require federal review of any changes to voting rules in states with a history of racial discrimination against voters
- Strengthen protections against gerrymandering, a practice that weakens Black and Brown voting power
- Make it harder to decrease access to voting materials, early voting, and polling locations in different languages
- Allow citizens to file lawsuits if they have experienced discrimination at the polls

BREAKING: The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act was just reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives.

This critical bill would strengthen and protect voting rights for millions of Black and Brown voters across the country. βœŠπŸΎπŸ—³οΈ
