i'd need a lookup table of 13! 6,227,020,800 entries, with each record holding 4 bits * 13, 7 bytes each. 41 gigs of ram.

it's not useful for much except checking if you've seen a game before.

it kinda sucks bc not all numbers are legal yahtzee games

the lowest number for a valid game is
rolling 1s every time, then scoring the categories in order from ones to yahtzee.

the highest number is rolling 6s every time then scoring the categories in reverse order.

again the 8 bits represent 5 dice. the 4 bits represents a scoring category choice.

2^364 is 111 digits in base 10.

the number of possible games is less than this.

it's a lot like the binary format but i throw out which dice are new rolled at a given turn.
so it's 8 bits + 8 bits + 8 bits + 4 bits, 13 times. a 364 bit number.

i think this is the smallest possible file format (uncompressed) for yahtzee games. but this morning i thought a different larger format was. heh.

using this encoding a yahtzee game is stored in 62 bytes or less.

roll 1 is just an 8 bit dice id.
roll 2 is 5 newly rolled bits, and an 8 bit dice id.
roll 3 is 5 newly rolled bits, an 8-bit dice id, and a 4 bit score category.
a record is 38 bits.

if all dice are held (newly rolled bits all 0), the dice id is omitted.

the final score category is also omitted.

the lookup table to go from dice to id is generated as follows:
