Van Ness average weekday ridership per month
A packed 5 bus
But to realize these benefits we need to generate more money than the existing $322M deficit and improve service.
Bus lines like the 49 Van Ness are packed leaving San Franciscans on the curb.
There is clearly a demand for Muni - but service needs to grow to meet it.
A study prepared for the SFMTA showed that for every dollar spent on public transit it will generate $2-3 in economic benefit.
In other words a robust public transit system will save San Franciscans time and money - benefiting the entire city.
www.sfmta.com/sites/defaul...
Growing and improving Muni will also have benefits for our cityβs economy as well.
Downtown rush-hour traffic has returned to pre-pandemic levels despite office attendance being below 50%.
This shift away from transit to cars can cost us hundreds of millions.
www.sfcta.org/press-releas...
The cityβs slide on their funding package for Muni. Currently it would only raise $150M.
Tax rates from the cityβs proposal.
In comparison with the cityβs proposalβ¦
β¦it would include exemptions.
β¦93% of non-residential parcels would be paying less.
β¦it would GROW service instead of just closing Muniβs $322M deficit when paired with the regional measure.

The βMuni Forever Proposalβ tax rate structure. Parcel Type, Area (sqft), Charge Single Family, 0-3,000, $99 , 3,000-5,000, $0.35/sqft , 5,000+, $1.99/sqft Multi Family, 0-3,000, $179 , 3,000+, $0.10/sqft Non-residential, 0-6,000, $399 , 6,000-12,000, $0.29/sqft , 12,000-48,000, $0.79/sqft , 48,000-400,000, $1.19/sqft , 400,000+, $3.99/sqft
We are proposing a progressive parcel tax where 85% of parcels would be paying a flat fee. For the rest, there would be additional rates applied only if their improved area - the buildingβs square feet - exceeds specific brackets.
You can find out what you pay at: sfparcels.org
In the years after the pandemic San Franciscans have seen record inflation, their bus lines cut, fares increased and commutes prolonged.
Our proposal would be fairly funded and generate over $260 million.
When combined with the regional measure it would be enough to grow service.
Letβs talk about the βMuni Forever Proposalβ - our plan to fund Muni. π§΅

If we don't take action now, we'll lose critical funding for BART, Muni, Caltrain, and AC Transit. Gov @gavinnewsom.bsky.social has less than a week to finalize a $750m loan for public transit in the state budget.

As part of @muniforever.bsky.social's campaign to fund Muni, we invite you to the Muni Forever Summit on 8/20. We need to form a citywide vision to fund Muni. This summit will create the building blocks to create that vision and a way to achieve it.

And two weeks ago, Mayor Lurie announced his plans of a ballot measure for Muni next year. All of this could not have been done without you.

City leaders are also mobilizing and waking-up to this crisis. Supervisor Mahmood joined yesterdayβs board meeting voicing his support for SFMTA to use their reserve instead of cutting service (thank you).
03.04.2025 06:35 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Because of your support, we have reduced the cuts this summer by half. No lines will be removed, no 45-minute headways, and no early shutdowns of Muni Metro. This will keep service running for the hundreds of thousands of riders who use Muni each and every day.
03.04.2025 06:35 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Hi y'all
As you may be aware, last night the SFMTA board voted 4-3 in favor of service cuts this summer to balance this year's budget deficit. While this was not the outcome we were hoping for, the fight for Muni funding is not over. Thank you to everyone who came out, wrote letters, and called in!
On April 1st the SFMTA board will once again decide again if cuts are on the table this summer. Come out and send another email urging them to prevent these cuts by using their reserves instead!

On March 25, 2025, provide public comment at the BoS during General Public Comment to support a general fund transfer and @jackiefielder_ βs Resolution on the $2 billion ask to the State for public transit funding.
π muniforever.org/speak-up
On or before March 29th email and call your supervisor urging them to support a general fund transfer to SFMTA to prevent the summer service cuts.
While the SFMTA Board voted 3-2 last Tuesday in favor of service cuts, our fight is not over β we will have another opportunity to reject these cuts when they come back to the Board for final approval on April 1st. Win or lose, the fight for sustainable funding for Muni is just getting started.
23.03.2025 19:12 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Because of your advocacy drastic cuts which included line suspensions, 45 minute headways, and early shutdown on muni metro are not on the table this summer! Our efforts also forced Mayor Lurie to announce his plans for a 2026 ballot measure. This all could not have been done without you!
23.03.2025 19:12 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Thank you to everyone for being part of the rally, volunteering, and voicing your concerns regarding the Muni Service cuts. Around 250 people attended the rally, more than 65 people made public comment, over 5000 of you send emails, and so much more!

Latest: Ahead of Transit Driver Appreciation Day (next Tuesday), San Francisco Muni operator, Mc Allen, is calling for Muni passengers to show appreciation for their operators by sending in commendations. He's hoping passengers will send in at least 500 commendations on Tuesday.

There are a million reasons to stop service cuts this summer and beyond. Muni is key to our city's climate change goals, equity, and economic recovery. That's why we're still here fighting hard to fund the bus!
