The rules for UK visas are crazy. My Aussie friend, married to a British citizen for about 10 years at the time, couldn't get a visa unless he already had a UK job paying over 40k. He has the skills to be earning a lot more than that but of course he couldn't get a job without having a valid visa.

MG hasn't been British for a long time. The smart move for Canada would be too get Chinese carmakers(s) to build / assemble in CA. That way you get vehicle assembly jobs and vehicle choice. Having just bought a Zeekr, I'm glad Australia has quality Chinese options here - just no local car industry.
