The massive list of suspended UCLA grants came out today: 300 NSF and 500 NIH grants. I am miraculously not on the list, but this is devastating. Science will be lost, progress will be frozen, people will lose jobs, and careers in science and medicine are being destroyed. This is not ok.

Is there a brain circuit target for restoring consciousness after brain injury? New work by @rolstonjohn.bsky.social @braincircuits.bsky.social says yes!

We had a wonderful time talking to @rolstonjohn.bsky.social, the Director of Epilepsy Surgery at Brigham & Women's Hospital. We talk about RNS for epilepsy, DBS for coma, traveling waves in the brain, stem cell therapy, closed loop DBS & more! Tune in πŸ‘‡

How may traveling waves in the brain impact seizure focus detection in functional neurosurgery?
How does RNS for epilepsy really work?
Are we ready for stem cell therapy in PD?
DBS for disorders of consciousness?

Find out in a conversation with the one and only @rolstonjohn.bsky.social πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

Patient Selection in Deep Brain Stimulation: A Role for Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation to Enhance the Levodopa Challenge? Dopaminergic medication and deep brain stimulation (DBS) improve motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), but levodopa response alone may not predict DBS outcomes. on the same notion but here we see an expansion of that idea.

In the linked post, researchers saw that using tDCS set up perhaps a favorable brain state for a drug effect.

Interesting difference in the S&P when looking at it in USD vs in Euro. In USD it’s on an all time high, when expressed in Euro it never recovered after the tariffs (since the USD tanked).

Cool thread! The agranular PFC does a lot of things, it’s one of the oldest cortical regions. Naturally also pain processing and movement. AMN is a good handle on it when using fMRI and as such is involved in diverse functions - cool stim data as well (even if N=2) πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

As a result, we provide an 'optimal' sequence for preop DBS using the best-rated sequences. We hope that this could be a first step toward standardizing DBS imaging across the globe. Of course, this is a first draft – we hope to incrementally increase quality going forward using follow up studies …

Chris also compared surgical ratings with automated (MRIqc) signal to noise estimates. While these correlated significantly, the automated assessment did not correlate with better targeting homogeneity across surgeons (but surgical ratings did).

These are all the sequences that were tested – it was a lot! Sequences were randomly presented to surgeons to avoid tiring / sequentiality effects while rating.

When comparing all the T2 sequences, more scan time was not automatically better – which is great, since movement disorders patients may sometimes have more head motion than healthy controls.
