It has worked at my job and it will work at your job. Target the people who you really think should know better, and teach them.

They probably missed an important piece of information because it was intentionally withheld from them.

But because they were given biased ass information in the guise of neutral educational materials, they have been misled in some of the most dangerous ways. They think they are literally correct.

PLEASE send those smart people the scientific studies we are now seeing, & teach them the truth!

Anyway this rant does have a purpose.

The smart people at your job who you wonder why they're still using AI? They probably took one of these courses or read info from the same sources.

They probably THINK they learned about this subject. They probably know SOME of what they're talking about.

Much like the "everyone will be using it someday so we may as well" argument, a LOT of the informational materials passed out about genAI before the last couple months came directly from the companies selling it.

We're only just starting to see more studies about the real harms AI is doing to us.

So I looked up who made the courses. The "instructors" listed were, of course, people working to build and sell LLMs.

Is this surprising, that an industry that makes something would be the one teaching the world how it works? Of course not. But that also means

the information

is

BIASED!

The thing that made me angriest about the ethics course, and all of these courses, was that it made the strong assumption that everyone would be, and should be using AI for basically everything. That we should be using AI to solve the problems that AI can't solve, so AI can solve them. (???????)

The ethics course did a good job of explaining that SOMEONE must be culpable in any decision an AI makes. Good. Important. Continue.

The course did not mention the stealing of others' work. It did not touch on the "hallucinations" as an ethical issue - that remained solely in the technical issues.

The course did a good job explaining what an LLM was, explaining black box theory, assuring people to check the work of AI, etc. This was fine.

The ethics course left a LOT to be desired. It mentioned environmental impacts once, only to gloss over it and say genAI would fix the problem itself (???)

I figured it was important that everyone know what genAI is, so they wouldn't think it was god or whatever, and that they know ethics so they'd know to just. not fucking use it whenever possible.

To be clear I didn't expect the AI course to tell everyone that AI was evil, but I still expected more.

I'm sure I've spoken about this before, but at my job a year or so ago I had to review some educational trainings about genAI, that we would then have all of the employees at my job take.

This was less "how to use it" and more "what is it" and a preliminary ethics course, so I eagerly did this.
