I fell hard down the rabbit hole last night and learned Jim Wolf was the 1B umpire for Kershaw's big league debut and a couple months later he was behind the plate for his first win.

That sounds about right. Been trying to help an elderly neighbor with a parking issue and have been passed along to a third city agency and counting

Was out of bed for 30 seconds and plucked not one but two grey eyebrows. It's going to be a great week, people.

*The formal baseball tradition is buying a pitcher a steak dinner but who knows if kids even eat steak these days and given the setting, there was a decent chance the kid lives a meat-free lifestyle or would choose sushi over steak.

The little catcher was so pumped he nearly jumped out of his gear and I said to him "That still counts. You owe your pitcher dinner" and was so excited for his excitement that I nearly broke character and high-five'd him at home plate.

It's BELTED to the gap. The right fielder dives but the ball is just out of reach. The catcher turns to me and says "We were close" with a wistful smile but then the centerfielder fires a LASER and the batter is out by a good 10 feet trying to reach second base.

"You know the baseball tradition, right? If your pitcher throws a three pitch inning, you owe him dinner."*

You can get your teammates to chip-in but you guys have to take him to dinner anywhere he wants.

So we settle in for the next pitch and...

The catcher from Sherman Oaks was a little fireplug- a human backstop with a cannon for an arm and very chatty. We quickly became buddies.

In one inning his pitcher got two quick outs on two pitches so I said to him...

The stands on both sides of the field were overflowing and it was non-stop cheering and chanting from the first pitch to the last. This was the Valley's version of the Kumite from Bloodsport and here was the best part...

Today I umpired my fourth baseball championship game in four days and they were all a warmup for the winner-take-all showdown between Sherman Oaks and Woodland Hills Little Leagues- two very prestigious programs here in LA with many alumni in MLB and even a LLWS title.

I thought of that sandwich the moment I tasted old guacamole!
