Day 1

Canadians, what expectations do you have of American drivers on your roads? Because I'm definitely going the speed limit, but I've had people pass me more than once going much faster than that, and I'm wondering if the speed limit is just a suggestion or if this is outlier behaviour.

I stayed at a hotel last night that had more hallway noise than I was expecting. My solution? To turn on the TV for white noise. So I fell asleep to Law & Order: SVU. Not exactly the go-to soothing background noise, but it worked for me!

I have to drive up near the border for a work thing tomorrow, so Sunday I'm planning to pop into BC for a bit. Do I have #TaylorSwift tickets? No. Am I hoping to enjoy some of the atmosphere anyway? Absolutely.

I've heard such good things about this book! It's on my list to read.

Anyway, I just felt like monologuing about The Circle for a bit. I don't usually talk much about the fact that I watch it, and I know people look down on reality television, but honestly, if you're going to try one, I'd recommend this one.

And I know reality television is heavily staged and scripted, but I still am such a fan of the fascinating character moments The Circle has created. The show is at its best when people are genuinely working in community, and it's so interesting to see the relationships that develop.

But multiple times, contestants I found super annoying I ended up falling in love with, then celebrating when they made the finale. It even happened in the very first season, and I was shocked by how drastically my opinion had changed.

I don't know if this is typical of reality shows of the genre, not being a consumer, but I find the character development of The Circle to be fascinating. Contestants I love from the get go almost never make it to the end.

I told myself that was it, but as fate would have it, I was actually sick when season two came out as well, so that was as good a reason as any to watch. After that, I admitted I was a fan. I've watched every season since then unapologetically (and healthy!).

At the beginning of 2020, I got really sick for a bit. Coincidentally, a fairly new reality show had just shown up on Netflix - The Circle. I didn't ever watch shows like that, but I was sick and wanted background noise, so I turned it on.

And I. Got. Hooked.
