At the Big Meeting @unitesharon.bsky.social was clear: if you want union money then you need to support workers.
Her demand was Labour politicians standing on picket lines, not encouraging workers to cross them.
Shame on Starmer for this.
To our fellow workers - now is the time for solidarity.

Keir Starmer: Junior doctors should break ranks with the BMA leadership The industrial action that starts on Friday is in no oneโ€™s interests and medics should not follow their union down its dangerous and destructive route, he says

@unitetheunion.bsky.social
I know that your policy conference have decided to review your financial relationship with Labour...
here is the leader of the supposed political branch of organised labour encouraging @bma.org.uk members to cross our picket lines.

This came up at a conference I was at on Friday, and I was curious if other think about this similarly.

I view keeping to my assigned time in presentations as an embodiment of my feminist values at work. There is a set amount of total time and going over takes time away from ~someone~ else.

At the American Shakespeare Centerโ€™s Blackfriars Conference, if you run over your time, you are literally forced to exit, pursued by a bear.

The bear can and will take your paper from you to shut you up.

"Every year in England and Wales, a cynic1 might describe a process like this:

Around spring, the incumbent government / devolved government promises that they are working hard to fix NHS capacity before next winter.

In summer, the relevant NHS bodies warn that nothing meaningful is happening on the ground and/or everythingโ€™s much worse, and they are in no way ready for the winter.

Through October and November we watch nervously as ripples of seasonal respiratory infections (e.g., RSV, flu and now COVID) grow into waves. The NHS know whatโ€™s coming and try vaccinate as many of the old, young and vulnerable as possible.

As winter progresses, wards fill up with patients, so A&E is unable to admit patients to the hospital, so A&E fills up, so ambulances are unable to transfer patients safely to A&E, and queue at the front door, and are unable to respond to new calls. Patients suffering from heart attacks and strokes wait hours for help, and incur enormous harms - enough to show up in excess death indicators.

In late December or early January, the waves of RSV, flu and COVID peak. If they all are high and peak at the same time, you get the winter of 2022 - average response time to stroke/heart attack symptoms of 1 hour 32 minutes. If, by luck, the peaks of infection are lower, or offset, you get the winter of 2023 - average response time 45 minutes. The target response time is 18 minutes.

The waves recede in January and February, the NHS cares for the survivors and we bury the dead.

It is however nuts that for literally the most predictable NHS crisis we still rely on the luck of the disease draw (and the weather) every winter.

@paulmainwood.bsky.social put it brilliantly a few weeks ago in his substack (which I recommend). 5/6

Actually no, at no point did any doctor or nurse agree to have the state/their employer "audit" personal electronic devices

Being a healthcare professional does not abrogate the ECHR Article 8 right to privacy

Men do not "help", they also do not babysit.
They adult appropriately plus they partner and/or co-parent.
Anything else is unacceptable.
If there's a baby in the house and he's not the birthing parent then he does most of the chores, not half of them, thats 50:50.

Will happily take a work-provided smart phone with the same capabilities as my personal one which currently offsets a huge amount of inadequate IT...

This is a systems issue that needs a solution. That solution needs to make it easy not to need to use a personal device (as well as appropriate IG)

This, fundamentally, is the problem with billionaires. It's not just how much money they have, but the fact that any one person having that kind of money constitutes a form of unaccountable power where they can just buy shit to silence voices they don't like.

Those accusing the ICC of being โ€œpoliticalโ€ do not fully understand the law.

Post WWII, we in โ€œthe Westโ€ stipulated a set of shared rules that we believed applied to everyone - enemies, allies and ourselves.

If an ally breaches those rules, the rules have not suddenly become โ€œpoliticalโ€ overnight.

A great paradox of working in Infectious and Microbiology is that we beg for new antimicrobials -

but as soon as they arrive the first thing we do is to tell everyone NOT to use them.

You can see why this deters pharma from investing in them.

Literally what Starmer has left her in place for.

They could have appointed an interim chair as her contract was up. Instead, they've protected a bigot in her post for 12 months, hoping she does the dirty work so they don't have to

Whatever Faulkner does now is as a LABOUR appointment, not a Tory

Just horrible, that this government hasnโ€™t simply scrapped the *entirety* of the sanctions regime, that has repeatedly been shown to make it *less* likely that people return to work, let alone the devastating effects mentioned in Liamโ€™s report www.theguardian.com/society/2023...

Dear Wes Streeting,

When NHS services are privatised, what is the benefit to patients and their communities? Surely it must mean safer care and a better deal for the taxpayer, right? Iโ€™m sure you wonโ€™t mind sharing your evidence.

Week 6 of asking.

How Many More Times Can We Say It? Your Harry Potter Addiction Is Funding Transphobia An anti-trans group called For Women Scotland is crowdfunding their legal challenge over the Scottish government's definition of the word 'woman' in the 2018 Gender Representation on Public Boards Act...

Some people got very pissy with me for saying that their Harry Potter addictions were directly funding transphobia but my point still stands: if you're still spending money on this crap, it is going towards hate & you need to deal with that.

"Biological" sex is incredibly complicated before one even considers socialisation and other aspects around gender.

There is a reason we don't test hormones, sequence SRY genes or even just karyotype people without cause.
When we ask these questions, we sometimes get surprised by the answers!

This is horrifying.
Also, their application to the court doesn't even make sense!

When a baby is born the team assisting the birth "assign" a binary sex for birth cert purposes based upon the (incomplete) information available to them, they don't "record" a permanent judgement in tablets of stone?!
