Day 12! This is sort-of cheating... "Bubble Bobble also featuring Rainbow Islands" doesn't have a japanese release to compare. But still... this is so... bland and yet overcrowded with various languages and too many fonts on the cover. Also the inclusion of Rainbow Islands is massively undersold.

Day 11! Shining Force! The western motive is not bad, I like the colors, only Max' sword-strike could more dynamic. It's also a bit weird that the hero faces away from the camera. That said, Yoshitaka Tamaki's original art is absolutely beautiful and brings out the games' team-dynamics very nicely.

Day 10! For the western release of R-Type III, the classic title-font was changed and US-publisher Jaleco replaced the pretty cool, technical and very straight japanese motive to a metallic airbrush-scene that make the whole package seem rather cheap - too bad this was then kept for the EU-version.

Everyone wants there to be a grand scheme behind all of this but the terrible truth is that extremely stupid people are in charge and they have a fanatical devotion to wrong, childlike concepts of society and economics cooked up by right wing radio hosts in order to sell tainted dietary supplements

Katsuhiro Harada leaving Bandai Namco and the #Tekken series? That's a shock! I met him for the first time in 2005 at Games Convention to talk about the amazing Tekken 5 - and the last time in 2023 to talk about Tekken 8. And yeah... he changed quite a bit! I wish him all the best in the future!

Day 9! The japanese Tactics Ogre for PS1 went with the absolutely beautiful motive of the SuFami-release. I have no Idea what Atlus was thinking with the US-motive. This is a game and a company going for a very specific audience that would LOVE the original art. Instead... it was this. Weird.

Can't wait to give this a try!!

Day 8! One RPG, three names, three covers. The US-version Quest 64 was released first and went with a rather meh render-motive. Europe was soon after, got a new name and nicely drawn cover-art. Japan got it in 1999 and shared parts of the EU-illustration - but mirrored! Or was EU mirrored first..?

Day 7! Here's a wild idea: if your game's big draw are designs by Ghibli-artist Katsuya Kondo, then maybe put them on the cover? The japanese release got it right; for the US, they moved them to a corner, gave a render-insect center-stage and went with a weird title-font. Europe got an angry redraw.

It's #randomgamesaturday! I'll go with cats today. Many cats. Asameshimae Nyanko - which roughly translates as "Good Morning, Little Cat" - is a cute, funny take on a Reversi-type game for Super Famicom. With cats. What more could anybody want?

Day 6! Arrow Flash is a pretty average Shooter for Mega Drive. Not bad, not brilliant - short and fun. In Japan, Sega went all in on the cute-pilot-factor. In Europe, they kept the general motive, but had her redrawn in a more western style - looking at those two side-by-side is pretty interesting!

My favorite game ever turns 33. And... what else is there to say about #FinalFantasyV? I love the characters, the world, the music and the battle-system, and the job-system is probably the most flexible, clever and fun mechanic ever devised in an RPG. There's a reason I play it at least once a year.
