• Enterochromaffin (EC) cells release signaling molecules which can activate nearby sensory nerves.Whether this occurs via a conventional synapse for-mation is unknown.
• EC cells rarely make contact with sensory nerves inthe upper gut but this frequency increases in the distal colon.
• Neurite-like protrusiton on EC cells, named by some as “neuropods” are not a preferential site of contact with nerve fibres.
