I make DAMN sure that when it's from a GOP-led state that I tell them that the GOP policies in those places make me feel unsafe there and I would not accept ANY offer there, and to let the employer know that in no uncertain terms.

20+ yrs ago, a friend with chronic fatigue mustered the energy to play ping pong with his dad one day a month. Tooks a week to recover.
His dad - seeing signs of activity responded to this with, "Surely you could mow the lawn on a regular basis."

This is the best advice for how to be better at ANYTHING in TTRPGs. Be a fan of the other people and their roles. Love the other PCs. Admire the DM and get excited for their work. Geek out over the stuff your friends at the table are doing and want them to be happy!
Everything else will work out.
