That's one reason why I thought it might be waste. Depending on date, even if a wall-builder couldn't read they could probably recognize how text would look. If it were a reused gravestone there might have been more respect for the dead v. 'here's some debris we bought from Bob the mason'

I'm thinking somehow broken or spoiled in process rather than the (visible) carving, which looks good

08.02.2026 10:36 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Depending on context, it could also be waste from a masonry workshop.

...but I didn't show him the picture, only told him about the text.

The resident nonmedievalist thinks it could be a from lintel or similar as they tended to move gravestones in the 19c rather than break them up and reuse. I'd also suggest memorial plaque. But also, same as above. If pitied my sighs is the text, is it poetry rather than gravestone?

Had such fun today up in that London doing some filming for a thing, pink glasses and big hair and all. The bigger the hair, the closer to the top of the motte, as my people definitely don't say.
