The Evanston, IL case is the one most people refer to when it comes to Flock reinstalling the cameras. The Flock contracts don't allow for anyone other than them even touching them so they took it upon themselves to put them back.

An #ALPR doesn't simply alert when they see a "criminal", i.e. a vehicle with an associated warrant. Systems like #Flock are a mass surveillance dragnet that captures and stores the details of *every* passing vehicle into a giant cloud hosted database searchable without a warrant.

It's already been demonstrated that Flock cameras recognize bikes and people - all it would take is another software update to enable searches! All of which just highlights the fundamental dangers of allowing this sort of surveillance infrastructure in the first place and why we need to push back!

The Fourth Amendment The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. *Unless you can... pay another entity to do this for you. Don't make it too obvious though, hide it in an inconspicuous box and call it “safety”. Don't keep this data forever; up to a year is probably fine. Make sure someone must at least type "asdf" for access - we don't want "bad" people abusing this or we'll have to go back to probable cause and those pesky warrants!

Another day, another abuse of surveillance tech by supposedly "trusted" actors. 😩

The only way that would be possible is if they were disconnected or covered over. ALPRs like #Flock violate the privacy of everyone by design.

The point of the public records legal case was more about making this non-viable as a business model (because of the liabilities) than to actually turn this in a free-to-everyone mass surveillance system! 🙂

Police departments seem to think only *they* can be trusted to violate everyone's privacy! 🤥
