You ever read a book and it has content that makes you wonder if the author is okay? I adore Sayaka Murata but I wonder how she's doing.

All you have to do is mask.

That’s it.

That prevents you from checking out early.

It lets you keep your heart, brain & immune system intact.

Your kids won’t get sick.

Your healthcare costs will sink.

Investing in respirators is the secret advantage.

ID: A newborn is wrapped in a small blanket and wears a blue beanie after being delivered in a hospital. They rest on a blue pad. The text reads, β€œThe Sick Times. Long COVID research updates. A study found that infants exposed to SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy were more likely to have adverse neurodevelopmental diagnoses. Another study has found that the common diabetes drug metformin may help reduce the risk of Long COVID. NIH is recruiting for a study to understand if people with neurological symptoms of Long COVID have inactive remnants of SARS-CoV-2 in their bodies.” A large retrospective cohort study of over 18,000 live births found that infants exposed to SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy were more likely to have adverse neurodevelopmental diagnoses by the time they were three years old. Children included in the study, published in Obstetrics and Gynecology, were born between March 2020 and May 2021. This pattern, which included higher rates of speech, language, and motor function disorders, was most pronounced when infection occurred in the third trimester and in male children. β€œCOVID is a real problem that poses risk to the mom in pregnancy and to the child,” one of the authors told ProPublica.
Another study has found that the common diabetes drug metformin may help reduce the risk of Long COVID. Shared as a preprint, the electronic health records study found a 53% lower risk of developing Long COVID when the drug was prescribed within six days of SARS-C0V-2 infection. The study included the health records of 496 people (248 in the metformin group. The authors concluded that the result of this study is consistent with randomized controlled trials and observational analyses on the drug for cutting Long COVID risk, and that it could be used to help guide treatment guidelines. Read more about metformin and Long COVID in our recent feature.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is recruiting for a small observational study to understand if people with neurological symptoms of Long COVID have inactive remnants of SARS-CoV-2 in their bodies. The study is recruiting 12 people, including those with Long COVID neurological symptoms and those who have β€œrecovered” from infection. Researchers will take tissue samples from multiple parts of the body, including the digestive tract, lungs, colon, muscle, and skin. Participants will also undergo a lumbar puncture. The study is based in Bethesda, Maryland. Study contact: Angelique Gavin, angelique.gavin@nih.gov.

I've read that putting your phone in greyscale mode is also a good way to decrease the impulses a smartphone can cultivate. That could also be an easy thing to try. I personally deleted a lot of social media and instead got to reading some Wildbow works online when I want that phone distraction.

6 million American kids have Long Covid.
This isn’t fringe.
It’s now more common than asthma β€” the #1 chronic condition in U.S. children.

Do you even know what Long Covid refers to?

Worm A Complete Web Serial

parahumans.wordpress.com

Text,/audio versions of Worm. It starts out a bit immature, but the author grows quickly with the practice. It's long, but the chapters are short & digestible, and definitely obsession inducing. The character writing also improves progressively.

If you want a 'not healthy' one that I like to read (not exactly a dark romance a la Blood of Hercules) Imp and Regent from Worm have an interesting arc.

I'd say write something that appeals to you first, with no expectation of turning it in, and then ask someone trusted and versed in romance lit to review it. I'm not a huge romance genre fan (not saying I can't be convinced) but my favorite romances are from series that aren't romance forward.

I like it when there's overlap in values but enough difference (in degrees, in conflict handling, etc) I'm yelling at the couple to talk instead of just breaking up, like in Good Omens w/the main characters. I'm not fond of it when the story says 'you're here, now kiss.' It's a tricky balance.

Emotion manipulation powers are underrated in superhero fiction. Cherish from Worm is an example of a terrifying villain whose whole power set involves detecting and manipulating emotions to very effective ends.

This may or may not be a controversial opinion, but I believe the remake of Fright Night is better than the original. While the original has its charms (such as practical effects), everything is punchier in the remake.

I know she's not portrayed as a 'likeable' character in Ward, but I really enjoy it whenever Sidepiece pops up in the story. (For context, I am halfway through)
