Youโ€™ve been clear in saying that Covid has not gone away. You ask people to wear masks at your events. But that attitude is not necessarily where the rest of the world is. How do you think about continuing to take precautions and advising others to do so when it feels as if society has moved on? I do it for a bunch of reasons. Firstly, I have learned that I enjoy not being sick. I know that the cost of long Covid is real and substantial, and I donโ€™t want to run that risk lightly. I also know that I have many friends and people Iโ€™m close to who are immunocompromised. So for the sake of the people around me, I also donโ€™t want to get sick. When I do events, I wear a mask for those reasons, and because I know that every time I do a talk, while the vast majority of people in the audience have probably moved on, there are going to be other people who havenโ€™t. I think it makes a huge difference to them to have the person at the front of the stage wear a mask. It tells them, Itโ€™s not weird. So I do it for that reason, too. In terms of holding this line at a point when a large swath of society has moved on, I have written a lot about the panic-neglect cycle.

I appreciate this response from Ed Yong on why he requests that people mask at his events. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...

Why "we" want insurance executives dead No, that does not mean people should murder them. But if you've watched a loved one suffer and die from insurance denial, it's normal to wish the people responsible would suffer the same fate.

I love all the outrage over what I said that's like "AND WHAT IF SOMEONE WISHED DEATH ON YOU" like the dozens of people that send me death threats on the daily? please be serious.

Twitter posts no longer have timestamps. That's exactly what you want on a network built on being a realtime information source. Possibly the worst to ever do it in social media

Highly recommend @rebeccajohn.bsky.social's investigation, which you can read in full here. She finds "Compelling new evidence shows this pattern of behavior [deny, dismiss, or downplay] was already hardwired into the industryโ€™s DNA by 1955" www.desmog.com/2024/11/12/r...

Missing the gig: When your subculture leaves you behind with Long COVID - The Sick Times โ€œMaybe now vocalists will finally start bringing their own mics,โ€ I tweeted in the first days of March 2020. My virtual audience was mostly friends I met by participating in subcultures in and adjacen...

"Punks accepted the sociological production of the end of the pandemic, moving in lockstep with the state... Itโ€™s hard to count ghosts. Have you noticed that some of us are gone? Do you ever miss us?"

Ngl Iโ€™m sad and nervous about so many people moving away from twitter

This destabilizes crowdfunding and thereโ€™s archives and info that will be lost

Receipts being harder to pull up with everyoneโ€™s memories being compromised for different reasons including trauma & Covid

This feels so purposeful

Iโ€™m going to keep it real and hope I donโ€™t get accused of overstating the issue; childrenโ€™s liberation is the key to the future you want. The active, and often dismissed, oppression of children is near the root of what ails us as a nation.

I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time - when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness. The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.

Do not obey in advance.
Resist. Do not offer an oppressive government what it wants. Do not anticipate its needs and offer up what you think it wants. To do so teaches power what it can do.

A simple and powerful act of resistance is to PUT ON A MASK.

Many leftists couldnโ€™t wait to abandon COVID mitigations and policies - tossing people like my to the wayside and making society completely unsafe.

We already have mask bans in the U.S. Normalize community care now!
