How many ways do they want to waste money? An β€œinvestigation” into this is ridiculous

He’s really leaning into the racism.
Has he ever actually been to NYC given he thinks this will work?

To be fair the FTSE 100 reached a new high on 28/10, 27/10…I could go on

They need to lay the groundwork for increasing income tax (probably by 2%) and explain why it’s necessary so it doesn’t come as a surprise in 4 weeks

The rumour is 2% in income tax across the board, that’s why she asked

HOWEVER…they need to get waaaay ahead on the messaging to avoid it being their LibDem tuition fees moment. And they had shown they are *terrible* on getting the messaging right

Completely agree-The manifesto had many more things than income tax and they require money. A sensible headroom means markets will be calmer (so cheaper borrowing) and no debate about tax rises next year. It would also reduce inflation so probably give space to allow thresholds to raise next time

There are a lot of plausible narratives even before you throw in unknown unknowns. Even the events which are β€œcertain” could be changed by events, such as Conservatives getting a new leader within a year.

But it IS fun to consider the possibilities

β€œA bigger buffer could create a virtuous circle: bond markets would be reassured by the additional headroom and so feel more confident in the UK’s finances, reducing government borrowing costs. It’s clearly the right thing to do, and much better than… months of uncertainty every year”

Rishi Sunak: Reeves mustn’t correct her Β£10bn error with tax rises β€” The Times and The Sunday Times Pre-budget purdah is going the same way as chancellors reaching for Dutch courage at the despatch box. Rachel Reeves has been out discussing the trade-offs she faces ahead of November 26, and rightly,...

Rishi Sunak advising the Chancellor. When he was Chancellor he correctly predicted inflation but then linked more debt to inflation…!?! So I don’t expect to agree with him but the quote below is one thing he does have completely right apple.news/Aqz8Qg5JLSB2...

(if anyone would like to maybe start some sort of campaigning or pressure group of and on behalf of immigrants with ILR and settled status in Britain then I would be interested in helping, or indeed trying to get it off the ground myself, email in bio, etc)

I’ve already seen calls for cuts in interest rates but i) it is still almost double the target and ii) services inflation is 4.7% Both of these will concern the BoE and i would not expect a cut in their next meeting. They’ll want to see a better reading and what’s in the budget first

Having been expected to increase to over 4% inflation remained at 3.8% for September U.K. figures released show, with falls in food price inflation offset by bigger increases in fuel. While it’s welcome that inflation didn’t increase it doesn’t change the overall picture.

Bad news but not terrible. This is only Β£0.1bn above the OBR projection but taken over several months confirms taxes will rise in the budget. Will she do income tax or try to fix it with 50 small taxes that are damaging to businesses? Oh, there’s also the inflation figure tomorrow

21.10.2025 08:19 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It was always going to be a mistake. They needed to reverse the NI cuts and then there wouldn’t have been the same inflation increase and borrowing costs would be lower which is driving all the borrowing problems now

21.10.2025 08:14 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I don’t see why the Brexit checks would force them to sell it. They might have to wait at an airport for 2 hours when travelling. Does that inconvenience really warrant a complete lifestyle overhaul?

21.10.2025 08:12 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

This is exactly right - Brexit has compounded all the problems. Lets take energy as an example. The weaker exchange that happened the day of the vote has meant we are paying significantly more for all the dollar priced oil and gas

Blaming the OBR for the Budget maths is a waste of time The government must explain why tax reform is necessary and desirable for fiscal sustainability

"The government needs to take ownership of the Budget and use it to construct a convincing narrative. That means not blaming the OBR or HMT but explaining why tax reform is necessary, why it will be good for growth and public services and how pain will be fairly shared.

Raising income tax could sure up the finances, give a proper buffer, reduce inflation. This will mean lower borrowing costs and less uncertainty. They can pair this with economy boosting non tax measures with the aim to increase tax thresholds each year if this holds

I am a little worried, however, that in a couple of episodes in the last couple of months, I have let my frustration bubble through the calm nuance that is meant to be the podcast's philosophy. But rants like this just seem to EMIT from me at the moment.

The buffer will remove speculation of further tax rises. Then they need wholesale reform of planning regulations to make it significantly cheaper while not cutting standards. At the same time tax reform to remove loopholes, cut needless rules and remove annoyances to make tax compliance cheaper

β€˜This is not a blip’: Markets punish Britain for losing its way β€” The Telegraph As the UK’s weak growth and high debt invite crisis, experts say Reeves must deliver at the Budget

I keep saying, and this confirms it. In the budget Reeves needs to raise income tax and cut welfare spend (this can be done over the parliament so is properly thought through and not rushed). This will help bring down inflation and needs to be enough to create Β£30bn buffer apple.news/AfyExr4KRRam...
