Tennessee's Governor Bill Lee has called a special session, which started yesterday, to take up his universal private school vouchers proposal, disaster relief dollars, and immigration policy. To learn more about the special session in general, check out EdTrust-Tennessee's Guide to Special Session.
DSAMT and the wider disability community are concerned that the voucher proposal discriminates against students with disabilities in several ways. For example, students choosing the voucher option would have to waive their rights to a free, appropriate public education (FAPE) under the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA and similar state law provisions. Moreover, most private schools do not accept students with disabilities, and the proposed law expressly permits these schools to use admissions policies that discriminate against students with disabilities.
It is essential that legislators hear from concerned citizens THIS WEEK! The Tennessee Disability Coalition has created a tool that allows you to easily contact your legislator regarding the voucher proposal. Please note that this tool utilizes a preset message, and that once you type in your name and address, it automatically sends the message to your representative and senator. If you would prefer to email your legislators (or all of them directly with your customized message, or to call their offices, which we also would encourage, you can use this Find Your Legislator page on the Tennessee General Assembly website.
If you are interested in following the proceedings this week, you can go to the General Assembly main page, click on "Schedules and Calendars" at the top of the page, then select either House or Senate, and you will be able to see all of the scheduled hearings and sessions, and can also watch sessions in real time by clicking on the video camera icon.
For more information, do not hesitate to contact DSAMT's Director of Policy and Advocacy, Erin Richardson, at erin@somethingextra.org.

Spoiler free review:
I went to see Nosferatu last week. It took me a bit to absorb what I watched. It was beautifully filmed and the acting was positively spooky. If you are a fan of the gothic genre you will enjoy this bizarre movie. 4 out of 5 โญ๏ธ
