The Dems are fully complicit in this, as their only strategy seems to be winning over voters from the right, who will never vote for them, instead of voters from the left, who will vote for them, if they stop running candidates who are courting the right.

Because they hated both of the realistic options. The Dems keep running wildly unpopular candidates, with their only strategy being to guilt-trip everyone into voting for them anyway, as the Overton Window keeps getting pushed further and further to the right.
