Just a quick Papa-Sierra-Alpha to all my beautiful new commuters hitting the streets this week:

In case you’re wondering if whistling and cameras work, today when agents were coming out of Burger King and I was at the door directly in front of them as they walked out they went β€œoh fuck” and quickly pulled up their masks and ran back to their car before driving off.

I know the social media hive mind and international press can only sustain attention on one thing for so long, but the federal assault on Minneapolis is just as vicious as two weeks ago when I was tripping over feature writers.

The spotlight helps us, and the resistance needs to grab it back.

There are horrors upon horrors being visited upon usβ€”lives and families destroyed, time and money and property lost, to say nothing of the stress and trauma. But each new violation only consecrates the resistance and strengthens our resolve. We will accept nothing but total victory.

People keep saying "Getting arrested is bad, actually" and while I'd certainly prefer not to be, the administration's entire strategy is built around the idea that I will live in fear of it, and shape my behavior to avoid it, and cry in shame if I am. That is how THEY CONTROL YOU.

ICE Expands Power of Agents to Arrest People Without Warrants

Scoop: Federal agents were told this week that they have broader power to arrest people without a warrant, according to an internal Immigration and Customs Enforcement memo reviewed by The New York Times.

DHS doesn’t even bother trying to lie well. The man whose skull was shattered told the hospital he’d been struck by ICE officers, an ICE officer told hospital staff the guy β€œgot his sh*t rocked,” then when it became clear how badly he was injured, they claimed he deliberately ran into a wall.

This is just insane. It’s only a matter of time before DHS kills another innocent person here.

What we found is bleak. Attorneys told us they’re struggling to get information in to or out of ICE and Customs and Border Protection facilities, which are holding nearly 69,000 people this month. And detainees often are forced to choose between remaining in crowded, squalid conditions or leaving the country immediately.

Judges in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles have ordered the government to facilitate attorney-client communications at Homeland Security buildings. But attorneys say that doesn’t always happen. Even if detainees get the option, some worry they’ll be punished if they take it.

Lawyers can't reach clients in ICE detention. I've heard it anecdotally, but scale of issue is horrifying.

In Minneapolis, you are protected by law against discrimination based on where you or your family come from – or where someone assumes you come from – including your culture, accent,β€―appearance,β€―or language. Learn more at minneapolismn.gov/civilrights β€―or call 311.

Working in government I learned that 99.99% of compliance is people thinking it’s the right thing to do or being afraid to break the law. Here, the government is threatening to prosecute masses of people for 100% lawful acts, but can only harass a teeny tiny fraction. So do it and don’t be scared!

What's morale like at CBP & ICE right now? New survey data are damning.
*21% of CBP respondents (9% of ICE respondents) believe their agencies' political leaders maintain high standards of integrity.
*Only 23% at CBP (18% at ICE) feel confident they could report illegal acts without retribution
