A close-up of a charred bundle of blackened fibers wound tightly around a wooden stick. The fibers appear to be burnt and brittle. The object is placed on a reflective surface, creating a shadowy reflection. The background is stark white, contrasting sharply with the dark, textured object.
#Neolithic textile production: an amazing find! A charred spindle with a charred ball of flax thread.
Found in the pile dwelling settlement of Sipplingen-Osthafen, Lake Constance, dating 3316-3306 BC. The damp environment has preserved it in good condition

This past week I examined cobweb fibers used as a paintings substrate. High magnification, and hyperspectral imaging techniques with variable lighting direction were super helpful to show certain features and properties of the web of fibers. #TextileConservation #ArtConservation

Public comment on US passport form changes related to trans
Public comment is now open for passport gender marker changes.
You can go here to go to each of the three proposed passport rules, and submit comment.
My suggestion: be unique, argue for trans-inclusive policies, against the constitutionality of the changes, etc.

Corewell, Largest Michigan Provider, Resumes Trans Youth Care Despite Illegal Trump EO
On Wednesday, the hospital system announced that it was resuming gender affirming care after a brief pause due to Trump's executive order attempting to ban it for those under 19.
1. Major trans news: Corewell Health, Michigan's largest healthcare provider, becomes the first hospital to resume care for trans people under 19 years of age after pausing it.

Looking at cobweb samples under the microscope. It was used as a substrate for a painting in the Northwestern University library special collections. The fibers are SO narrow. #ArtConservation

If you cannot call it what it is when all in a week: a government removes every mention of a group of people, destroys information about them en masse, bans their discussion in schools, restricts their ability to travel and starts seizing and refusing their official identification, when will you?

Sometimes my job is especially joyful and silly: many examples of fake lionโs mane mushrooms, made by three conservation colleagues and myself. For a multimedia object installation in the museum that originally used live rotting mushrooms on furniture, can you spot the real one! #ArtConservation

Weird how not a single one of the newspapers and magazines that have been breathlessly churning out "cancel culture" thinkpieces for the past four years have managed to use the word "censorship" at all to describe the most rapid and comprehensive campaign of mass-censorship in recent US history.

Iโm back to thinking about the etchings printed on highly reflective synthetic fibers by Barbara Rossi. Many of them she also stitched, pieced, quilted, embroidered or beaded. Forever fascinated by her style and methods. #TextileConservation #ArtConservation
