Like yeah Trump hates women, he hates black people, but he also hates immigrants, trans people, care workers, woulded vets... there's clearly something deeper that ties all that together. It's authoritarianism! It's fear. It's a gut-level, instinctive, intense aversion to weakness or vulnerability.

This is not, I hope it is obvious, any kind of defense of Trump. (Can't be too careful stating the obvious on this site.) I'm saying he doesn't have the frontal cortex, the self-awareness or self-discipline, to even be principled in his racism! Principle of *any* kind implies consistency.

In a society where black people are marginalized and diminished, your average authoritarian is reliably going to be racist against black people. They will dutifully hate *whatever* group is coded below them.

Conversely, they'll worship whatever group *does* have power (usually rich people).
