Variables are merely another number and not given any priority when going through the order of operations. I originally made the same mistake before I expanded the notation properly.

The first response you presented changed the order of operations by separating the 6 and 2x actions. It's a very subtle and nuanced change that drastically changes interpretation. Just like a rogue parenthesis in a line of code.

Yea, written like that the expanded "true" notation would be 3×y+6÷2×x so with order of operations you go left to right with all multiplication and division at the same time then follow with any addition and subtraction steps in the same combined left to right direction.

It depends on how its written. If it's 6÷2x then the 6÷2 comes first. Written as 6 above 2x, then the 2x comes first and would be noted as 6÷(2x).
Notation is very picky and will dictate the order of resolution with seemingly inconsequential differences on the surface.

I see where the issue is at, and I fell into the same trap initially by performing the 2x first.

Expanded it becomes 3×4+6÷2×3 and is better diagramed as (3×4)+((6÷2)×3) when using parenthesis to document order of operations. Thus it goes to 12+(3×3) then 12+9 which equals 21.

Is that going to be it? That could be the winner.
