I think about this post several times a week

Just got his blood test results back and it's looking like this is it. There's nothing else we can do. Three more hours. I'll miss him...

Another update: he's seemingly completely lost his sight, and while our efforts have been helping keep him as happy and comfortable as possible, he's still declining and we can't afford to do much more for him in current circumstances...

[6] L To Calvisius.
Thave been spending all my time here among my tablets and books as quietly as I could wish.
"How is that possible," you ask, "in Rome?" Well, the Circensian games have been on, and that is a kind of spectacle which has not the slightest attraction for me. There is no novelty, no variety in it, nothing which one wants to see twice. Hence I am the more amazed that so many thousands of men * should be eager, like a pack of children, to see horses running time after time, and the charioteers bending over their cars. There might be some reason for their enthusiasm if it was the speed of the hors or the skill of the drivers that was the attraction, but it is the racing-colours which they favour, and the racing-colours that fire their love.
If, in the middle of the course and during the race itself, the colours were to be changed, their enthusiasm and partisanship would change with them, and they would suddenly desert the drivers and the horses, whom they recognise afar and whose names they shout aloud. Such is the influence and authority vested i one cheap tunic, I don't say with the common crowd, - for that is even cheaper than the tunic, - but with certain men of position; and when I consider that they can sit for so long without growing tired, looking on at such a fruitless, cheerless, and tedious sport, I really feel a sort of pleasure in the thought that what they take delight in has no charm for me. Thus it is that I have been only too glad to pass my leisure time among my books during the race-meeting, while others have been wasting their days in the most idle occupations. Farewell.

Jerry: Loyalty to any one sports team is pretty hard to justify. Because the players are always changing, the team can move to another city. You're actually rooting for the clothes when you get right down to it. I mean, you are standing and cheering and yelling for your clothes to beat the clothes from another city. Fans will be so in love with a player, but if he goes to another team, they boo him. This is the same human being in a different shirt. They hate him now. "Boo! Different shirt. Booooo."

Pliny the Younger apparently thought sports were very stupid but it's funny that it's for the exact reason laid out in Seinfeld s6e12 ("The Label Maker")

With at least some facets of the illness retreating temporarily, went out to a thrift shop yesterday to pick up the hot new sound of the summer

Palestinian journalist and community leader Odeh Hathalin, who worked on the Oscar-winning documentary 'NO OTHER LAND,' has been killed by an Israeli settler.

My third most controversial media opinion is that the Willow TV series was in fact about as good as the original movie (a messily delightful 7/10 if ever there was one) and didn't deserve to get axed and expunged from history

We don't even know with any certainty how many trans women were murdered in a single act of imperialist brutality by the IDF to make some kind of rhetorical point but the real transmisogyny is people being mean to some dopey liberal YouTuber online for acting as an apologist for this shit.

It doesn't matter if they are ever coming for you.

It was always ever already too much that they were coming for anyone.

i can't even imagine the freakout if like mamdani or ilhan omar had ever refered to lenders as "shylocks." but unlike them, trump actually has a very long history of making disparaging remarks about jews

I'm really glad the anti-trans Medicaid exclusions were removed from Trump's billionaire bailout but a bill that still kicks 20 million (largely working class) people off their health insurance is still going to have a disastrous impact including and especially on trans people. Kill the bill.

Today is a real bad day for trans folks. Lots of us are already struggling under the constant mental and emotional strain of being the target of international hate campaigns for years now, and it ain't getting easier

Support us, now more than ever. Emotionally, financially, politically. We need it

there’s a certain strain of ultra-literal leftist who dismisses all art on principle for not being a literal gun aimed at a literal tyrant, they’re as uselessly pedantic as far rightists who think role playing games are literal satanic ritual, and it’s ultimately the same species of fallacy

Update: the poor little fellow is suffering stage four kidney failure at age 15 and we're just doing our best to help him be as comfortable and healthy as we can manage, but he had to stay an extra night at the kitty hospital and we're not sure what the immediate future holds

Our cat has just been hospitalized with some sudden life-threatening kidney issues, and expenses are downright astronomical, far beyond our means to deal with at the moment. I know things are tight everywhere but any help is deeply appreciated πŸ˜”πŸ’œ

I am not jockeying for showrunner position because I know damn well I would immediately go power-mad and bring the Minister of Chance back for revenge on his old friend Doctor Who for trapping him in an abortive timeline in a bottle universe... and I know I'm the sole target audience for that

I am not immune to the "well I would simply do it better!" mindset as a longtime (sometimes against my better judgement) fan of Doctor Who, BUT...

A US Senator was thrown to the ground and handcuffed by federal agents, and then the DHS Secretary went on to say that they are taking control from the "socialist" local government. That is fascist, there is no other proper word for it than that. No euphemisms are necessary or warranted.

Picard is fascinatingly bad in so many "this hand didn't even care to find out what the other hand was doing" ways before you even scratch the surface of its weirdly lumpy and inconsistent politics and internal logic

Star Trek already had an Andor in the form of DS9 imo, but it's LONG overdue another, especially if they can finally shake the weird post-9/11 awkwardness of a lot of modern Trek

I think Greta Thunberg is the best example of how there is no way of protesting that will satisfy the scolds. It'll either be called too aggressive or a self-serving publicity stunt.
