oh, that's... it didn't even occur to me that Scrivener would just be completely wrong about that. (i did wonder about what kinds of options developers had for this stuff)

the biggest problem with AI is how incredibly it sucks. the second biggest problem with AI is how many of the people who correctly understand how and why it sucks also *don't* understand what it actually is and how it actually works

obviously, Scrivener defend their stake as an AI Free App, a position it is right to take and for which it is beloved by its users. there really isn't anything for them to do except shittalk Apple Intelligence, a feature that isn't actually doing much harm to them or their users, and here we are

so, Apple and Scrivener are both behaving pretty rationally, and the users sure as shit aren't wrong to be jumpy and suspicious about AI (Scrivener's especially; authors have some of the biggest grievances). users see AI features. Scrivener sees users who flee at signs of AI. what are they to do?

but that means it shows up in Scrivener, an app that attracts exactly the subset of users who least need, least want, and will be most offended by being offered Writing Tools. as Emma Thompson said; "i don't need you to fucking rewrite what i've just written! will you fuck off! just fuck off!"

Apple's Writing Tools (which can "make this paragraph sound more professional", etc) is a great example of something large language models are *really good at*, is something that at least some people *actually want*, and is *very* suitable as an API to make generally available in any text context

frankly Apple's AI position is fascinating just on its own. they don't seem to be true believers, but are very invested in not being seen as not being true believers. the AI features they do offer are specific, well-chosen, and unobtrusive, but the space is *so* toxic that they catch flak anyway

it is honestly fascinating to pick apart the something like seven-layer-deep system of social and technological dynamics that lead to posts like these, which are a novel blend of completely warranted, completely understandable, and completely wrong

the whole reason everyone loves a poirot denouement (or the entire ace attorney/danganronpa trial conceit) is not because the *solution* is valuable but because the *solving* is valuable. you *can* show the detective seeing everything and not only does it *work* it works *better*

in a gruelling arms race to create perfect replicas of productions that were originally adapted from books we too often forget that the most important thing in a mystery show is that it must be fun to watch in addition to being a correctly functional mystery that plays fair

it is like the airplane! of murder mysteries except instead of jokes it is gatling-gunning connections and contradictions at you. does anyone care that nobody could connect this in realtime? no. here's all that matters; if you *could*, it would light your brain *up*, and *here* is how it would feel

it's quite simple, really; it leans into its incomprehensibility. there is simply too much to connect rationally, but the show is edited so well you can easily follow along. it is a procession of cutaway gags, its own continuous recap and denouement, and a single out-of-order episode enthralls you

the concept is, well, okay, sure, a murder at the white house. decent. oh look there's an eccentric detective who's smarter than everyone. yawn. oh there are a ton of suspects and everyone's hiding something. whatever. oh they're picking up small details. seen it before. can you stop watching? no

this thing is like. as a murder mystery, if you try to appraise it like you would a christie, it doesn't go anywhere. it's not a fucking christie. that's not how it works. the place you have to start at is that it is simply fucking electrifying to watch

i am still not entirely how best to qualify my feelings about netflix show The Residence but here's one interpretation; it is the most persuasive case i've ever seen for style as the way to sell a murder mystery that can't be interesting in a conventional way. also, it is an all-time television show
