Cambie's coordinator Daniel Rojas is also looking for other ways to help clients use more safely. For example, many opt to inject heroin because smoking it on tinfoil means a lot of it will be wasted. But a glass hammer pipe allows clients to smoke and retain their supply.

At Cambie, Colombia’s first safe injection site in Bogota, staff ask clients to log data about their most recent drug use to help them inject more safely.

Congratulations to Bogota and Cali for opening Latin America’s first officially sanctioned Overdose Prevention Centers. There are around 200 OPCs around the world and they have saved countless thousands of lives — which is why Trump is attacking the three that exist in the US.

Safe injection sites are controversial because they require staff to assist clients in taking illicit drugs. But existing research shows a plethora of public health benefits, including a reduction in syringe litter and public drug use and greater access to treatment.
